What to wear to a ball?
Help! I'm going to a ball in April and I haven't got a clue what to wear!
I'm 5ft 7 tall and a size 10, I don't mind my arms and I hate my knees!
Anybody got any ideas what I could wear, I don't what to end up looking like a meringue !!
Thank you

Re: What to wear to a ball?
It's quite hard to suggest anything without something to go on first - e.g. have you got something that you want to base the outfit on? A pair of shoes or a wrap or some such?
Some general suggestions then: black is always a safe and reliable bet - Monsoon, Debenhams and Oasis have some nice black dresses at the moment. You could either go for something quite restrained and classic (say Monsoon's strapless chiffony number), and zing it up with accessories, or you could try something more vintagey and glitzy (Oasis in particular have some pretty detailed vintage-look dresses).
TK Maxx is a great place for a rummage - they quite often have fantastic ball gowns.
Budget permitting, Coast and Whistles are worth a look too.
ETA: Definitely a long dress - sorry, should have made that clear! I automatically assumed that any ball dress would be long by definition.

I'd go for a long dress. That way your knees are covered and it's more formal. My sister and I had to go to some formal do's last year and one of my dresses was from Debenhams (but not the best quality, ok for wearing for a few hours though). She got a lovely dress from Monsoon - she's a size 16 and it looked fab, it really showed off her curves.
Personally I think that unless you're really scared of standing out, black is a little unadventurous -maybe a dark jewel colour, like deep red or green.
I can't find a pic of my debenhams dress but here is my sister's dress

Thank you both very much, you've given me loads of ideas.:)

You should check out any local bridal shops too...I've just ordered myself a gorgeous little reddy purple number. It's long, and has a seperate top that's all side swept and a little bit beady. Very understated and purty.
I wore a black dress from Monsoon to a ball last year...it's the chiffony ruched one with a handkerchief hem. It was a safe bet really, and there were a couple of other people in the same but different colours. To be honest I'd say a full length was the more popular choice.
Hope you find what you're looking for!

Answer:
I know i'm not bella sorry... but just wanted to say that I bought linen mix trousers in primark the other day and I would recommend these to anyone!!! £6 each I just couldn't say no.
Answer:
I'll check. Didn't see any when I went. The Derby Primark is very hit and miss but it does have the crochet dresses
Thanku
Answer:
I also bouth the same trousers as Yingers. A complete bargain for £6.
I bought them in black and khaki.
I'm going to get some more tomoz.
Answer:
Hi Confusius, yes I got the white ones and the beige dress and they are lovely, 100% linen and I think they were £19, I will definitely be getting some more. I also bought a long linen turquoise shirt which looks great with the white trousers, I love linen, just can't imagine it ever being warm enough to wear it!
Tweed trousers

Tweed trousers
I'm looking for a pair of those tweedy style trousers in either grey or brown.
I only ever see them wide legged and was wondering if you can get them in bootleg eg tight on the thighs but wider at the bottom. They also need to be 34'' in length and probably Size 8.
Anybody seen anything like this??
MB:)

Re: Tweed trousers
I *think* Oasis had some before Christmas, but I haven't seen anything like that recently. Tweed is going out a bit for this season, I think, so it might be harder to find tweed trousers. HM or TK Maxx might be worth a look.

Answer:
I second HM - my ex-flatmate loved trousers like this and always got hers from HM - regardless of whether tweed was in fashion or not.
Although, she only ever got them in wide leg so not too sure about a boot leg version.
Answer:
I think I saw some from Marks and Spencer in a magazine recently. Or they had some from Tesco in the Florence and Fred range.

Just wondering really, has anyone been in?
What's it like? :D
Answer:
Is this the same place that all the mags were raving about a few years back and jemima khan was repeatedly seen wearing the same velvet trimmed cardi?
No i've never been... but remember reading about it once on how they are so elitist that they hold preferences to their clientelle. Their stuff is ridiculously expensive too (although perhaps not much more ridiculous than other usual designers  ). I think I also read that they only let certain people in - real celebs, people with money or serious shoppers only.
I could be wrong though and could have been reading a tabloid or wannabe mag :o !!! I don't even know where it is and not sure that I even care.
Answer:
yeah that's the place. it's moved location - it was on fulham rd (I think?) and now is ont he corner of savile row. Notable for its scary 'guard' aka skinny pre-pubescent looking highly effeminate man wearing makeup!
I think you have to be 'known' to go in - so you have to be a celebrity (i think they pick and choose among those too though) or some sort of aristocracy. I can see their point - Coleen Rooney can instantly turn a nice enough bag into a symbol of British trailer trash, and they don't want everyone to be able to buy their clothes, probably for similar reasons.
Am considering waltzing up to the door looking extremely sure of myself and laughing when they ask me who I am.
Ahem.
Maybe.
bridesmaid dress
NO.5. ask :
bridesmaid dress
Hi, my brother is getting married in December (seems a long way off!!) and I'm one of the bridesmaids. His girlfriend has decided that she wants to have different dresses for each of the bridesmaids because we're all different shapes and that!
She wants us to pick a dress that she's going to get made for us, all in the same material.
I don't know what the material is like yet but I think it's going to be a silvery grey colour.
Can anyone point me in the right direction to find a dress that I'd like as I've never had to wear anything formal before!
I'm kind of short (5ft4) but will probably find some nice heels to wear. I'm pear shaped but not terribly so. I'd rather it wasn't that low cut as I don't have that much up top!
I thought backless would be nice but it will be december and the wedding is on an old ship so I imagine i will be freezing!
thanks!
Answer:
The most flattering shape of dress for pear-shaped women is strapless A-line. :)
