Quick help required: What the bob do you wear to a Gala dinner?
I'm on a course for three days, and on tuesday is a Gala Dinner. Now I haven't a clue what to wear to this. ASt the moment it's a crushed satin spearmint green ribbon-neck cutaway top, and a black chiffon asymetric hemline skirt.
Does this sound ok?
It's at a college in Oxford if that helps in any way.
Answer:
Hi, I think Gala dinner is the type of party you can wear coctail dresses to, so Oscar style dresses rather than shorter ones.
But then again, it's been a while since I got an invite to a Gala dinner so I might be completely wrong
Hope you have a good night!
Answer:
In that case i'll stick with the outfit above. It looks classy, and the skirt is just below knee at its shortest mid calf at its longest.
Outfit for the races
NO.2. ask :
Outfit for the races
Ok, so I am a real race goer and usually wear something comfortable and warm, but nice. I am going to the Irish National next weekend and I want to look nice for this one as we have a runner (fingers crossed).
However, my usual brown tweed 3/4 length A Line skirt and brown suede (gorge!) boots combo with various tops, cashmere coat, pink pashmina and brown hat is out this year thanks to my friend asking whether she could try it on (we are going to the races together-it's her first time!) and it looked SO nice on her she couldn't NOT wear it!
So, problem.
I have the nicest red, pillar box, hat with feathers and it would suit the meeting we are going to next week. The problem is I don't really have anything to go with it and I am B R O K E!
Can I wear black slacks with a black woollen V neck top and black boots (stick with me;) it's not all black) with a red belt (where do I get one from?) long black jacket and a red pashmina and red bag?
What do you think? Does that sound nice?
Where will I get a cheap-ish (say £30) long black jacket from?
Where can I get a red belt from?
Or can anyone think of another combo which might work.
Help please!! And I'll give you some tips
;)
Answer:
Does it have to be a long black jacket ? I've seen lots of black jackets around in Dorothy Perkins, etc. but not long ones.
Answer:
I have no advice but a silly story! I've only been to the races once - Cartmel was told to 'dress up' as we were with a load of army boys in the posh section (apparently!). I was told to imagine the Ascot scene in My Fair Lady or the races scene in Pretty Woman.
I checked double checked with my friends they all said 'summer wedding posh'. So I wore a goldy-beige trouser suit, strappy heels a beady top. The boys I was with wore suits, shirts ties another female friend wore a pretty summer dress with strappy heels, pretty clutch bag flowers in her hair.
We got there everyone was in wellies, cords, polo shirts not a 'dressed up' person in sight!! we felt like right lemons had lots of strange looks comments all day. Luckily there was free wine so we drank our cares away! By the end I didn't even care that not only had we not won a single thing but also that my shoes were only fit for the bin my suit trousers were beyond repair with all the mud on the hems!
Next time, if there is a next time, I'll be in jeans boots!!
Answer:
Bless you DG! Cartmel, not known for its cosmopolitan clientelle.
Still, hope you had a good day and the army boys treated you well;)
I think I have decided now, I am going to wear a brown skirt with boots and white shirt with a brown suede belt attached to the bottom of it, with the red hat.
I won't care anyway, half way through the day I am going to be DRUNK!
My name's cfc and I'm a binge-aholic.....
Do you like this kaftan and this top?

Do you like this kaftan and this top?
Not something I'd normally go for but it looked gorgeous when I saw it in store:

Also, got my eye on this top - piccy here doesn't do it much justice but it's the most gorgeous choc colour and is v. flattering - looks great with jeans and heels:

Just after opinions really, good or bad....
Thanks! :)
Answer:
I like the kaften, love the beading. It's one of those tops you can fling on with jeans in the summer time and not make any effort but still look glam. Not so fond of the top, it isnt really anything special imo.
Answer:
I like that second top, it reminds me of one I saw on a vintage clothes site which was gorgeous.
Answer:
Thanks girlies! I must admit, I wouldn't have normally looked at the second top but a friend of mine has it and it looked really nice on - yet on the hanger, it doesn't look like anything special. Just goes to show that you should try things on, even if they don't look great on the hanger!
Answer:
I've found most skirts to be like that. They look all saggy, boring and 'lifeless' on the hanger and yet on the mannequin in the window they just beg to be bought.
GAP drop SJP
NO.4. ask :
GAP drop SJP
Hi
Just heard on Radio 5 that GAP have dropped Sarah Jessica Parker from their next series of ads as she is too old - she is to be replaced by Joss Stone - just though it was interesting since so many baggers seemed to hate the latest ads
Answer:
Joss Stone won't make me go and buy their clothes. Celeb endorsements never have an influence on me.
I thought SJP was okay for Gap actually. The ads with Lenny Kravitz were cool.
Answer:
no they don't have much influence on me either - my gripe with GAP ads in when you see something you like you can never find it in stores:mad:
Answer:
Oh God. As much as she looks like a horse, I could handle SJP but I really really hate Joss Stone. Not that I've met her, but she really annoys me ! I think she thinks she's a middle-aged black soul singer. Not quite.
Answer:
I actually thought SJP looked great in the gap ads... didn't necessarily make me buy any of the clothes either... I'm with CX - celebs in ad campaigns have no bearing on me.
Uniqlo
NO.5. ask :
Uniqlo
Does anyone know what the sizing of their jeans is like? I'm a 30" waist in Topshop, so a size 12 I think. Are they true to size? I hate ordering online at the risk I'll need to send things back, it's such a hassle and there's no Uniqlo shops near me!
X x
Answer:
I was trying on Jeans in there today (Straight fit ones) and I tried on a 14 and a 16 and couldnt get into either properly! I'm normally a 12-14. But I find this in TS Trousers and Jeans too, i'm not a very good fit for jeans though as my thighs are really big compared to the rest of me. I think they run truish to size but they might need a bit of wearing to loosen them up a bit!
Hope that helps somehow :)
Answer:
Ah. I bought two pairs of Uniqlo jeans last week and I love them both. I found the sizing good; I'm a 32 in jeans and so I found their size 14 a good fit in all the right places. I bought the boyfriend jeans and the indigo wide leg. They are both wearing extremely well and for £39.99 for both, I am delighted!
:D
Answer:
I love uniqlo jeans! I wear a size 10 there, but for whatever reason can't fit into TS jeans so guess am not being very helpful. I normally wear 28 in FAMK, ES and most other designer brands though probably now a 27. Beware that Uniqlo jeans stretch madly and I can pull them off without undoing them now (and I have a bubble bum fo sho) ... but doubt my thighs will fit into the 8s!
Answer:
That's a great help, thanks ladies!
