Wrap Dress for Black Tie Do?

NO.1. Ask :
Wrap Dress for Black Tie Do?
Hi there,
I've had a black tie do sprung on me the weekend after next and have no idea what to wear as I've never been to one before. Would a plain black wrap dress be suitable? I really hate the idea of having my arms on show at the moment and all the other dresses I've seen are sleeveless. I'd dress it up with lovely jewellery and shoes.
BTW, the do is in a restaurant so it's not a ball type occasion.
Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Philli xx :)
Answer:
When i saw the subject - i initally thought no, but because it is on in a restaurant you might be able to get away with it. Not 100% sure though, its just that so many people tend to dress them down. Will be interested to hear others replies....sorry for not being much help.
Best of luck enjoy the night :)
Answer:
Accessorise accessorise accessorise! It sounds just right for a restaurant event. If it were a ball I'd have said definitely not. What colour shoes/bag were you thinking of going for? Some sparkle would definitly set the outfit off I think.
Have a great time!!
Answer:
Thanks for the replies.
I'm not sure what colour shoes/ bag etc. yet. I'm always a bit uncertain about colours with black but I really fancy something different. I have some silver Gina sandals that Mr Phillida bought me last year. I've only worn them once because they're a bit tight, but as it's in a restaurant and I'll be sitting down most of the night I could wear those.
I'm going shopping today so I'll see what I can find.
Answer:
I agree with Clarice. Some nice, classy silver jewellery would be lovely! I think you're right, at least you'll be comfortable!

Almost all my clothes are black. I've worn only black for 9 years. I think it always looks well and is very slimming, I'm size 16 on top, 16-18 on bottom. I'm not confident enough to go full colour but I'm trying to 'break the mould' so to speak. I have bought a teal and a silvery top to go under black cardigans. This I can live with.
I have also bought two brown tops (close to black eh! ;) ) but I'm just wondering - Is it ok to wear brown with black?
    Answer:
    Depends who you ask!
For me, definitely yes. Darker shades of brown and black need careful accessorising (and are more casual for me) while lighter, chestnutty shades can be worn more freely and look rather chic to me.
A few of my rules for brown and black:
-- Try adding a dash of colour in to the mix! This can be as simple as wearing a coloured scarf or belt, or carrying a coloured here. Turquoise is a great colour for breaking up black and brown outfits.
-- Accessorise well. A black jumper and brown trousers say just looks dull and poorly matched - add in a chunky belt, interesting jewellery, funky scarf and nice boots or shoes and it looks cool.
-- Black and brown aren't equal in this relationship - i.e., if say a black trousers+brown top looks OK, it doesn't automatically follow that you can reverse the colours!
-- On the same note, wear brown shoes with brown trousers or skirts - not always, but a good general rule. I think you can wear brown shoes with black trousers or skirts.
-- An all-black outfit can work with brown accessories - I'm not convinced that the reverse holds.
Hmm, long and waffly as usual. Hope it helps a bit.

I have to wear black/grey/navy for work and I get really hacked off with looking like an undertaker's assistant all the time so I:-
    1. Hunt out black stuff in interesting shapes - long and witchy, sheer lace panels, funky sleeves, big wedgey black boots - you get the idea
    2. Always carry a coloured here and wear a coloured scarf
dunno if it helps but you can work with black to some extent - I (hope) I never look frumpy in it

I think the other posters have summed up well what works and what doesn't with black and brown.
I'm just wondering though if you are a bit reluctant to experiment with colour because you're not sure what suits you? I only say it because I decided I needed a 'colour injection' after my somewhat tactless (but well-meaning!) aunt told me I wore too much black and dull colours.
Now that I've made the effort to find out what colours suit me I really feel liberated because it's opened up so many more choices. There were loads of colours I avoided previously because I thought they didn't suit me but I've found that I can still wear them - just not near my face.
One piece of advice I was given is that the colour you wear nearest to your face is the one you really have to get right. So just experiment when you go shopping but holding different colours against your neck.

Thanks for all your helpful replies. In the beginning I wore black for handiness sake but as I grew larger the slimming factor became quite important to me.
At the moment the extent of my color is shoes, heres, scarves and tops to be worn under a black cardigan. I can't see myself going for a full colour exposed top just yet.
I bought (very dark, almost black!) brown trousers but when I put the brown top on with them it looked really mismatched. The top looked fine with black trousers, but not with the black cardigan.
At least black always matches with black, there are a million different shades of brown etc that clash with each other!!

    Outfit for my 21st?
    Hey,
It's my 21st in a couple of weeks time, I'm not sure what we're doing but we'll probably either end up in a rock club or Garlands. I love going out in jeans and trainers but feel like I should make an effort for this birthday!
Normally I look fairly rocky/glam rockish I guess. I'm really not into the long gypsy skirts as I just wouldnt feel comfy in one. However I have got a black mini skirt that has the gypsy like handkerchief edge to it but it's reeeeeally short. I'm a size 8, with long black curly hair and olive skin. I spent all last year in a wheelchair which means 1) the tops of my legs look rubbish so I dont know whether such a short skirt would be a good idea and 2) heels can be a bit dodgy, i do have a pair of silver ballet pumps I just don't really know what goes.
Help me out people, I need some wise fashion baggers to get me out of my trainers for a night! I dont mind buying an entire new outfit if I'll wear it lots:D
    Answer:
Okaaay..... I know nothing about what you'd wear in a rock club (or Garlands!) so feel free to ignore me totally!!
I'd stick with jeans if you feel comfy in them (and since it's your birthday you don't want to spend all night tweaking your skirt and worrying about your legs - been there, done that!!). How about a dark indigo pair or a faded black pair? Then how about a metallicy or embellished top - maybe halternecked, or loose and long enough to be belted with a big funky belt? A funky stripy blazer or jacket would look nice over the top. Add in some earrings and a cool necklace or bracelet to funk it up a bit. Instead of ballet pumps, which I think would look too girly, how about pointy-toed flats, maybe in a similar colour to your top or belt?
Of course, the in look at the mo seems to be shorts - but I can't really tell you how to wear them because I've yet to find a pair that flatter me - TheBlonde, Mimi, Mitchey et al are the girls to ask about those!
Hope that gives you some ideas, and enjoy your birthday!

    Answer:
Hiya! I completely agree with geek_kitten! French Connection have a fantastic range of jeans in all differant styles. Glam it up with a funky embellished belt (Accessorize have Gorgeous ones) and a nice top. French Connection are doing lovely halter neck type tops for the spring. Geek_Kitten's jacket idea's fab there's loads around and you can customise them with brooches or sewn-on flowers etc. I'd go with nice pointy flats maybe funky silver. What about wedges, they can be less diaster-inducing than high heels and very in at the mo. I would accessorise to the hilt!
Go all out - you're only 21 once!:)
    Answer:
Cheers for the replies girls, you've pretty much described what I wear normally (except I'm normally a bit rockier). I already have dark jeans, a halterneck top and a striped blazer so I guess at least I don't have to splurge my student loan on anything new :D
    Answer:
As with the others, I'm not sure about the kinda clothes to wear to a Rock Club?? I think a plain black camisole, a nice loosely fitted type with some knee length black shorts or denim knee length shorts with some wedges or low heeled peep toes (I got a lovely pair in gold from Top Shop). Have you anyone who will give you an honest opinion on your skirt too? If you won't feel comfortable in it though, long length shorts or jeans are the best way to go. Don't forget your asseccories i.e. bangles, beads etc.
    Have fun!
