Is a suit a must for temping interviews?
Hi!
This is going in Careers too, but as this forum seems a lot busier I thought I'd give it a try.
I'm applying to temping agencies, and if I get asked to register wonder if I can get away without a suit. I'm guessing a suit is best, but I'm petite and am finding it near impossible to find one for similar reasons to those posted in the Petite suiting thread.
So are there any alternatives? Especially as the weather's warmer (fingers-crossed)? (I'm completely a trouser person.)
Cheers for any advice!
Answer:
I would think it depends what industry you would be temping in. I work for an internet company, and frequently wear jeans to work, but would always wear a suit for my interview. I think, if in doubt, go smart. When you have the job, you can figure out what people wear in practise, but until then, better to be conservative.
Do you have a recruitment consultant you are working with - you could ask them...
Answer:
If you're just going to the agencies to register, I shouldn't think it would matter too much if you didn't wear a suit - as long as they don't specify that they should (check out their website) and you wear something equally as smart. Nice well-fitting trousers and a smart top possibly - pay attention to your shoes, bag, jewellery and personal grooming ie, nails and hair. Basically dress and look how you would expect a potential candidate to look.
When it comes to interviews for jobs and the first day on a new assignment, I would def say wear a suit. HTH :)
Answer:
Um..... I think you should probably wear at least smart trousers and a jacket, but they don't have to match.
When I temped in my student holidays I used to really struggle to find anything appropriate and turn up in strange pulled together ensembles. In the end this worked to my advantage as they used to send me to art schools and ad agencies where the dress code didn't matter rather than banks and proper offices, but I wouldn't recommend it if getting a decent job rather than wearing your own clothes is your main objective!!

Thanks for the replies so far.
I know a suit is the best idea, and it would be a no-brainer if I had one :(. I just don't know whether I'll find one soon, and it's too much of an expense to go with second best.
I'm aiming for the arts or charity sectors, so your method, Mimicat, may prove useful! ;)

Black tie do
NO.3. ask :
Black tie do
I'm going to a charity auction thingy tomorrow night and the invitation says black tie.
The outfit I have planned is a light grey strapless top with delicate silver beading and sequin detail
A pale pink chiffony, multi-layer skirt which comes down just above my ankles.(A bit SJP and very swooshy)
Silver strappy Manolos.
Vintage oyster-coloured beaded clutch bag.
Is this black-tie enough?
I have tons of dresses and ballgowns but fancied something a bit different. But definitely don't want to be underdressed. I hate dress codes!
What do you reckon?
Answer:
That sounds GORGEOUS. I think it should go just fine - I'd certainly be quite happy to wear that to a black-tie event...
I'm so jealous!!
g_k
Answer:
Wow how lovely! I'd love to have loads of ballgowns and dresses, but I have NONE at all since I never go anywhere posh or formal :( . I definitely need an excuse to get properly dressed up.
Have a great time you will look so cute!

Oh LauraJane that sounds lovely! I love the sound of the swooshy skirt and the oyster clutch! I have a black tie do on friday night and am am re-wearing boring things I've worn a hundred times already - not even got any new jewellery - boo hoo! And really really want to wear my beautiful bronze dancing shoes but haven't got any accessories that match them, tbh. Somehow it's OK for nothing to match when you're not formal, but a bit random if you're doing chic monochrome sophistication, which, of course, I am. Ahem.
Have fun LJ :)
P.S. Mimi - maybe we need a here Ball/Cocktail Party? We can all meet up in our finery for a quick pint and some sausages on sticks - tres chic!

That's a good idea - I'd love that!
