New in at Miss Selfridge

NO.1. Ask :
New in at Miss Selfridge
has anyone seen the 'New in' stuff on the website, there's a yummy red dress with a scoop neck and long bells sleeves (much like one Sienna was seen out in a while back teaming it with black opaque tights...)
Is it a silly thing to buy, would i ever wear it?
sorry am not techy enough to post a pic!
Answer:
Is this it?
Answer:
Hmm I can't post pics from Miss S or Topshop either.
The dress: I looked at it, and it loooks pregnant.
The dress on it's own I mean
I think you've got to be very thin (sienna like) or pregnant to wear that, as otherwise the cut of it will make you look like you have a belly.
And red, well I'm not sure it would be worthwile, unless you love wearing dresses, and normally wear them all the time.
But that's just my opinion.
Answer:
I saw that in store, and had to run away before I bought it.
I think it's gorgeous (love the colour) and I'd certainly wear it. It could be quite transseasonal as well - worn with thick tights and boots in the winter, and strappy sandals or wedges in s/s.

Answer:

    tying scarves around your waist
Just wondering what you all think about this. i use belts but i find using a scarf can hide my tummy abit more but i don't see anyone doing this anymore. would this look be alright?
looking forward to your opinions on this.
    thanks
    Answer:
Yeah it can look fine. I did this the other week with a leopard print scarf threaded through my jean loops. I had a plain black camisole on and wanted to break it up a bit and it looked good - I thought so anyway!! Made a change from wearing it round my neck.
    Answer:
I do this quite often, usually slung around my hips or threaded through belt loops - I tihnk it's a great way to quirkify and prettify outfits :) The last time I did this, I was wearing black gauchos and a cream top with bronze shoes, and wanted to tie the outfit together a bit,. I used a cream scarf with bronze beads and sequins and it finished the whole thing off quite nicely!
I often buy quirky vintage-look scarves from charity shops for this very purpose.

    Answer:
I like wearing scarves around waist (low especially) and have worn a big one/nearly pashmina like with my white gypsy skirt and it looked funky!
Saying that, I also like wearing them with trousers or jeans (saw a girl wearing one today actually!) but jeans need to be tight or drainpipe like otherwise scarves will not keep them in place properly....
    :)
    Answer:
How do you get them to stay up? Just with a knot? I have a sequin one I really like but the knot falls out when I've walked around for a bit. So not the look I'm going for... :(

    NO.3. ask :
    Personal Shoppers
Has anyone used one? How did you get on?
I wiull be 30 on September the 5th so I have decided to book an appointment with the personal shopper at Debenhams to see if they can suggest any new outfits or ideas for me!!
Any opnions/experiences with this are appreciated!
    Answer:
Hi. I've used personal shopping at Selfridges and Top Shop.
Top Shop was crap and was basically just bigger fitting rooms. The "stylist" (17 year old on school hols is a more fitting description) just took you round the shop floor, which you coudl quite easily have done yourself. She had no idea whatsoever. I ended up not only trying to sort myself out but also two woman in adjacent cubicles who I manged to kit out quite successfully.
Selfridges was better - I was looking for an outfit for my sister in law's wedding and thought I'd give personal shopping a go. Because it was a one off the stylist didn't know me at all and kept bringing out unsuitable outfits but we got there in the end. Changing rooms are lush with showers, drinks etc.
Its not something I would do again I don't think unless the stylist knew me and what I liked very well.
    Answer:
I used Selfridges for a wedding a few years ago. It was a truly horrid experience that ended with me in tears and then shouting at the two 'stylists' I had and leaving feeling utterly depressed. I gave clear instructions about what I was looking for - well, actually I gave them free reign but gave them very clear instructions about what colours, styles and shapes did not suit me and even helpfully told them what designers I know suit me and what don't.
The two stylists (one of whom was being trained and looked more like a temp SA in a low-budget store:rolleyes: ) basically brought me 5 outfits that were exactly all the things I said I didn't want. I was very patient and tried on each outfit and showed them why muddy green (for example) did not suit my colouring, or why a lavender wool skirt suit (for example) did not fit my description of 'fabulous stylish media wedding' or why bias cut was not good for my curvy figure. This whole process depressed me as basically I tried on COMPLETELY WRONG outfits that made me look huge and washed out and frumpy in a totally mirrored, fluorescent lit room (just to magnify the horrible fitting room experience).
They then disappeared for an hour leaving me sitting in the fitting room and brought back even more horrible outfits - I picked out one which was a pale flesh pink with teeny navy polka dots, cap sleeved bias cut high round neck t-shirt style top and a full elastic waist mid-calf but handkerchief hemmed skirt.
FYI I was a size 10-12 with 32F boobs and a tiny waist and large but in proportion hips - classic hourglass. I am also very pale skinned with light blonde hair and light blue/grey eyes.
the colours were wrong, the cut was wrong - I looked like an insipid tent. I had a boohoo in the room and then came out and shouted at them "what are you doing bringing me clothes like this!" etc etc.
and then calmly got dressed and huffed out.
sorry to go on but that was about 3 years ago now and it still horrifies me. In fact, I think I've only been to Selfridges 2-3 times since.
I think I have PTSD (post traumatic shopping disorder) .
I would be prepared to try a personal shopping experience again though, but like jules says I would be more inclined to go to a store that knows me or a particular shopper that someone recommends to me.
    Answer:
Thankyou for both your responses! Elliecat that sounds herrendous, I too would be sobbing.
I'm intrigued to say the least how this is going to go!!
I was kind of hoping that they could look at me and do a bit of a Trinny and Susanah on me. You know, tell me what they think my best asset is (as I don't know) and find something flattering to suit my shape. This is wear it may become interesting, I am only just 5ft, so I am very intrigued in how they are going to kit my out in trousers and skirts etc. as my bottom half is always a challegne.
I think I've become stuck in a rut with my clothes and always seemt o pick up the same things and likewise avoid the same things!!
As it's nearing my birthday, I am hoping for some advice regarding clothes that make me look youthful and not old or frumpy!! Maybe I've got my expectations too high!
    Answer:
I think that unless the SA/stylist knows you well it would be impossible for them to successfully "dress" you.
I am lucky enough to know the sytlists at Matches very well. They know me, know my shape, what I do/don't like and I trust them implicitly. They know to ring when stuff comes in that they think I would like and they know what trends would/wouldn't suit me. They are totally honest and many times I have worn something or considered buying something and they've said "no".
My advice would be to find a smaller boutique that you like and get to know the SA's.

1 Attachment(s) Does anyone know what this bag is? Thanks in advance to those who can help :)
    Answer:
hmmm not sure... my thoughts are either Celine or Fendi.
    Answer:
Thanks Yingers! I just love the colour of it and would like one similar. I'll google those and see what comes up. Thanks again :)

    Answer:
    Really don't think it's Celine
    Answer:
The only reason why I thought it might be celine is because the parts on the bag that are where the end of the handles are is very similar to the celine ella.
