How ethical is Primark??
Hi guys
All this talk of Primark goodies is staring to make me drool. Must admit had always assumed that the reason stuff is so cheap is because people further down the food chain don't get paid very much.
Looking at their website it seems I'm totally wrong. Does anyone know any more about their policies?
Then I can go guilt-free shopping
Answer:
It was named as the least ethical shop by Ethical Consumer magazine in 2005 but since then they have joined the Ethical Trading Initiative, so I guess they're OK to shop in now.
Although this report would appear to indicate that they are ignoring it (along with Tesco and Asda)
Hmmmmm.....
Answer:
I am sure there is something on the Primark website about their ethical stance
Found it
Answer:
I am not convinced that Primark.com will provide such an objective answer to the issue posed. I use this site frequently and have found it to be good (but you can't get detail unless you subscribe).
They don't do very well. Perhaps when you buy form there you could agree to put away a pound or so for Oxfam?
Another site I use (but again the more detailed info requires subscription) is here
Wouldn't it be great if we could pool together and get these shops to behave differently? I mean, a t-shirt that is £3 would be just as good value at £3.10

Thanks, that's a great idea. Despite what they print in their customer statement, it's hard to know with any of these retailers just how much is really done behind the scenes to make things better for the workers.
Thanks all for your comments and the website links... off to do some more research now!!

Have I been ripped off with PP (Ebay)
NO.3. ask :
Have I been ripped off with PP (Ebay)
I've won a pair of jeans on Ebay from the States today, and I checked the invoice and he's charging me $28.5 postage and packaging. I emailed him before the auction ended asking what the PP would be to the UK and he said it would be $20 if the auction ended over $100 (don't see what difference it makes what price the jeans go for!) and if under $100 then the exact price from the post office. Now, the auction ended for under $100 and he's charged me $28.5. I don't see how it can cost almost $30 to send a pair of jeans to the UK?
Answer:
Did he say what service he's using? Is there a cheaper alternative he can use?
You can check the US postal service here:
and get an estimate shipping costs.
I think a lot of people over charge on shipping these days because I don't think your ebay fee percentage takes into account shipping charges if that makes sense?
Answer:
How bizarre! I am used to paying $15.00 but he is doing as agreed via email so don't think you really have a come back :cmdunno:
Answer:
The cheapest service can take 6-8 weeks, so I doubt he would use that for ebay. I've shipped over stuff before, cheapest option, but I did wait 2 months to get it.
Answer:
thats sounds about right to me-especially if its sent Global Priority, what he meant was that if it went for over $100 then its the insurance he needs to charge more for.

Hello all!
We ae having a work night out on saturday as a surprise for someones birthday and the theme is geeks and nerds! I have no idea what to wear apart from big thick glasses but I would still like to look half normal as there will be a nice young man from work there so i dont want to look totally horrendous! :(
Any ideas??? I was starting to think buttoned up to the neck white shirt (which could later be unbuttoned) and a black 60s tunic thing?? plus the giant glasses?
I usually love fancy dress but this is far too hard!
Thanks for any suggestions!

A pinafore sounds great, plus you'll be be able to wear it again. There was lovely grey one in Warehouse recently and it was only £10 in the sale. I think i'd personally go with the pinafore idea teamed with a shirt, tights and flat pumps. Depending on how i'm feeling i'd either team it up with normal glasses or large glasses and bushy eyebrows.:)
This is a hard one, i mean what are "geeks" supposed to look like? I'm kinda geeky anyway.
I'm sure other baggers have more suggestions.
Answer:
I'm sure if you googled something like 'geek chic' it'd come up with alot of Prada's stuff a few seaons ago (her AW06/07 was labelled geeky wasn't it? Lots of parkas, books, and minimal make-up)
Geeky tends to say, 'not oviously interested in Fashion', but alot of eighties sportswear etc seems to be redefined at geeky - think synthetics, clashing colours .. and if in doubt, I think the outfit you've described would work - especially if you had coloured tights perhaps?
Debenhams returns. What a palavour.
NO.5. ask :
Debenhams returns. What a palavour.
I need to send something back to Debenhams, I got it sent to my home address over Easter and Im not back at Uni.
I couldnt get hold of the courier to return it before I come back, and knew my parents wouldnt wait in for it to be collected so bought it back up here. I e-mailed them to say I wasnt there and needed a returns label which wasnt included in the package.
They sent me three attachments, 1 downloaded to nothing, another downloaded to an arrow, and the third one a picture of the world!
After re-reading the e-mail it says they've 'posted' me a returns label, despite me previously saying I was no longer at home hence why I needed a downloadable returns label (that or if they could only post one I thought they would ask for my current address)
Im very angry! :writing: Sorry, needed a rant.
Have you had any similar problems with any companys?
Answer:
I only order things I know I will want to keep from Debenhams, after wasting two whole afternoons waiting in for their courier colleciton!
