Why are high st sales down?
this year has seen another worrying dive in high street spending, causing kookai and MVC to go into administration. Why do you think this is?
I think the problem is high prices. With chains such as Primark and supermarkets churning out on the ball, up to date collections at bargain prices, the rest of the retail world is fighting to attract trade.
Now with Topshop (and the rest of the Arcadia stores) pushing up the prices relentlessly, I think this a worrying trend that could see many more well loved stores closing their doors.
Another thought is quality - I bought a basic v neck jumper from Evans (a Topshop/Arcadia counterpart), and an almost identical one from George. Even the mix of fibres was identical. The Evans one was £35, the George one was £12. After one was the Evans one bagged, lost all elasticity and bobbled beyond recognition - it looked as if I'd worn it a thousand times. The George one is still going strong three months (and about thirty wears) later.
What are your thoughts?

Noooo! I :throb: Kookai
:(
I knew about MVC but had no idea about Kookai.
I think internet sales have probably been a big factor. I for one bought a lot of stuff through internet shopping last year compared to previous years.

I agree. More people are shopping on-line instead.
Answer:
For me it is completly self inflicted on the part of many high street stores, I hold no sympathy whatsoever.
I feel that it will only be when they make more of an effort to improve the quality of their goods and increase value for money that high street spending will increase.
Also like many others have said, the internet is also a factor as ease of use, value for money and choice make people more likely to buy online.

Guess that great minds think alike, FP!
I think this thread is similar in tone to the one I started on TS clothes quality, there seem to be a lot of bad things being said about them in particular, although I've found that a lot of places that are supposedly good for clothes are getting worse in quality, whereas 'cheap and cheerful' brands such as George, Tesco, NL shoes (but not the rest of their clothes) and Primark are selling by the bucketload because they're decent clothes at a more reasonable price.
Of course, I shouldn't be even thinking about clothes at the moment - have literally NO money to spend!

Teal gloves?
NO.3. ask :
Teal gloves?
I've just seen a lovely pair of teal gloves in Topshop which would match my new dark navy coat a treat but the S/M size is still too big for me (my current gloves are a size 6.5 - not sure what that equates to?)
Has anyone seen any nice ones elsewhere that I could go try on?
Ta :)

Answer:
I bought my friend some lovely leather ones from dotty ps for £12 and coincidently my mum bought me a pair which were almost identical from gap but i have no idea how much they were.
Could try the great plains website for woolly ones if you don't want leather.
Answer:
John Lewis always have a big selection of leather gloves in all kinds of lovely colours - think they're quite pricey though, around £35 mark.
Answer:

Just had another thought (just in case the DP ones don't suit) - has anyone seen any at HM? I remember their gloves in the smallest size fit me well a couple of years back...
Dry clean only cashmere?
NO.4. ask :
Dry clean only cashmere?
I have a cashmere jumper bought in the topshop sale and this could be a deciding factor into whether i keep it or not!
My brora cashmere socks are handwash only as i would expect and i don't have a problem with that but this jumper says dry clean only?
Do you think it would be ok gently handwashing it? I wouldn't be so worried if it was a dark colour but it's cream:cmdunno:
Answer:
you should be fine, it's usually better for cashmere to wash it than dry clean it anyway. they just put that to cover themselves.
Answer:
I would hand wash it. I handwash all my cashmere regardless of what the label says.
In fact I have discovered a cycle on my washing machine called hand rinse, sometimes I just pop cashmere in on that cycle, only takes about 10 mins, and they come up lovely.
Answer:
Oh goodie! Is there a special handwash detergent for cashmere, i just used normal washing powder with my socks :o
Now i just have to get used to being a normal length jumper when i'm used to longline:lol:
Answer:
ive bought a cashmere shrug in the ts sale and i washed it by hand using dreft :)
O/T Which pillows?
NO.5. ask :
O/T Which pillows?
Also posted in homes but it seems a little dead over there....
I'm fed up of buying cheap £5 for 2 jobbies that flatten as soon as a bit of dust falls on them so want to get some new ones.
I'm stuck between getting 3 different types...
No 1 - Goose feather pillows
No 2 - Goose feather and down pillows
No 3 - Fogarty pillows with hollofibre filling
Which would you suggest? I want a nice soft sink your head in pillow that doesn't go flat like a pancake within 2 seconds
Thanks in advance

Answer:
Hiya CiC, I've got 4 pillows on our bed, 2 Goose feather (1 each) then 2 hollowfibre (1 each). I find this mixture works well as the goose feather stay quite rigid then I put the hollowfibre on top so it's all soft and your head sinks into it.
I just prefer to try and keep all bed linen, duvets etc natural fibres as I think they are more hygenic and comfortable to sleep in.(Apart from the hollowfibre which are just for comfort!)
I've got a goose down duvet too.
Answer:
Thanks for that GATC :)
I wasn't sure but i thought goosefeather would make the pillows all fluffy but i'm guessing after a couple of sleeps that go lumpy and hard?
Answer:
Hi CiC, I'd go for natural as well.
We bought 2 half goose feather, half duck down pillows about 6 weeks ago as our others were synthetic and had gone all lumpy and given me a really bad neck. So far they're fine, really nice and squashy mold-to-your-head-ish.
I think good pillows are as important as a good matress, when it comes to your back.
Answer:
I agree Arietty :) What prompted me to do something about it is my migraines. When i get them my pillows just don't feel comfy and it doesn't help. I get a lot of neck pain too so why i haven't got better ones yet i don't know:rolleyes:
I might get a 2 goose feather and 2 hollow fibre (for a double bed) that way i've got the best of both worlds.
I just remembered why i haven't got better pillows - that little lot is going to cost me about £30:cmdunno:  That's like a pair of shoes or something:p
