New job - need fashion help!
Hi fashionistas!!
I have a new job, working with young people for Connexions if that means anything to you. I need to be smart but fashionable and practical and a bit casual so as not to scare them off!!
I am totally stuck with a wardrobe though. I think I will need:
  • coat(spring/summery)
  • Tops
  • Nice trousers
  • Bag (quite big for all my junk!)
  • Maybe new shoes as I only really have ballet pumps

Help!! Do you have any suggestions of what to get? I'm 5'7, brunette, size 12 (ish!) and hate my thighs!!I am also still on a skint budget and won't get paid till nearly May so need some bits to take me up till then.
Thanks girls xx
Answer:
Congratulations on the new job!
I think a nice pair of wide-leg trousers would be good - quite slouchy so comfortable and thigh-hiding - smarter than wearing jeans, but as you said not too formal. Dorothy Perkins were doing some reasonably cheap pairs a few weeks back, but most places probably have them. You would need something quite fitted on the top with them. HM are always good for cheap tops in a variety of styles colours, and of course Primark for some bargains. Liven it up with nice jewellery.
I would maybe hold off buying too much until you start though so you can get a better feel of what sort of outfit you want to wear once you've been there are few days.
Answer:
Congratulations! Have worked with lots of Connexions workers before, based on what they wore/did (:) ) I would say...
*Cords or wide leg trousers as suggested
*V-neck jumpers with little vests underneath (Primark have lovely colours in at the moment £6 each)
*Ballet flats or flat-ish boots
*Cord skirts
*Well-fitting shirts/tank tops
Answer:
congratulations on the new job :)
wide leg trousers definitely a good idea - comfortable, flattering and seeing a rise in popularity as a reaction to the infamous skinnies
in terms of shoes, unfussy kitten heels might be a good alternative to ballet flats - slightly dressier without looking like you've tried too hard
for a spring coat why not try a trench or mini mac? one of this summer's 'must haves' but if you get a reasonably classic style you can wear it for years
a bag in black or brown leather can be paired with almost anything, though a light coloured canvas with brown edging is another big style for spring
in terms of tops, why not get a collection of shirts/blouses and jumpers and vest tops, plus a cardigan and a light jacket that match a number of things to be layered as and when. looser, unfitted styles of top with three quarter length sleeved jackets are quite 'cutting edge' if you carry them off properly.
all of these things can be picked up quite cheaply on the high street, and i'd advise buying less from a higher quality store rather than a whole bunch of stuff from primark as they will, in my opinion, look better and last longer. good luck!

    the truth?
if someone has started a thread along the usual lines of:
" I got this and it's lovely, look, what do you think????..."
do you actually tell the truth? would you actually post that in your opinion something was truly hideous or made the bagger look like a tank? would you just say something a bit vague, or would you not post at all for fear of offending anyone?
    just wondering...

nah, i'd be honest, i just posted a thread asking baggers what they think of some shoes i want to buy, and i just got an honest answer
    Answer:
I would tell the truth. And I would hope others would do the same. But please don't all email me at once and tell me I look like a heffer in my skinnies on stylediary :p
    Answer:
I would only post if I could offer something constructive to say like a better suggestion for part of the outfit to improve it, rather than outright rubbishing it.
If it was just an item of clothing someone was thinking of buying though, I would say if I thought it was horrible.
    Answer:
Everyone has different taste so I just assume when someone asks if you like something..... they want you to say if you like it or not and why.
If they say "isn't this wonderful?" and I hated it then tbh I would probably just hide and not post if I thought something was truly AWFUL!!!!!
Sometimes you see pages of "oh yes it's lovely" then one brave soul pipes up "I don't like it".... followed by 30 others

    :)
    Answer:
It's ok, nothing wowee and something i wouldn't buy myself. Think it could look quite cheap if the fabric is slightly shiny like it looks like it might be.
    Sorry:o
    Answer:
A bit on the tarty side, imo. Too much flesh what with the short length and the deep V down to her belly bottom, I'm afraid.
    Answer:
I agree with LP - if it was low cut but long, or short with a higher neckline, it would be nice, but both very low cut and very short looks a little cheap, imho. Sorry.
    Answer:
I think you could only wear it as a top really?

    Do you have some?
If so I need to inspiration as to what goes with them well!
    Thanks!
    Answer:
I have dark red/plum coloured ones and am completely lost about what to wear them with. I've had them since last year, but only worn them a couple of times with grey cropped trousers. Apart from that I'm stumped :meh:
    xx
    Answer:
Yeah I just tried them on with a few pairs of boots (albeit very quickly) and none of them went! Will have to have another play round later
Red usually goes with loads of my stuff!
ETA: They're one size and they're really baggy on the ankles- hence trying boots! Sadie they will go with something, just a case of finding what! (which usually ends up making my room look like a jumble sale! :o )
    Answer:
Not sure what they'd look good with tbh.
    Answer:
Grey and black spring to mind and possibly camel.
Not liking the sound of red tights though to be honest:o

    ETA: Second pic didn't work....
    Answer:
    Try again
    Answer:
I love the shape of both of them - I'd tend to go for the second one though because I'm a bit boring when it comes to patterns and prefer plain fabrics :o - although the first one isn't too bad, I'd have to see it in the flesh to see how 'loud' it is and what the fabric is like.
O/T but I'm really loving these new jacket shapes that the shops seem to be doing.
    :D
ETA: Hmmm, although looking at the second one again, other than the shape, it is a bit on the boring side.
The first one would look great with some long wide legged trousers and heels, a tight T and beads/pearls - a bit Katherine Hepburn, if you will.
Ach, I'm a bit undecided now!
    Answer:
    I think they're really interesting shapes. I think they'll bulk up a body but I don't think that's a problem for you!
OK the fabric doesn't look that great but if they're a good price I think the interesting style might overcome that.
    Answer:
They're both alright but I prefer the first one; its really nice, I'm thinking of getting that myself! :)
