O/T - need a bit of careers guidance (bit self indulgent)
At the moment my degree is the bane of my life. I'm in my final year and it is very intense, I'm on a studio based course and so with everyone in my year pretty much all day every day, and it is very competitive.
I feel like I am pretty much regretting having chosen to do it for the last three years of my life, and feel as if I'm not good enough, and even if I was, my course director (bitch from hell) would never notice, I would never be given any opportunities from them, they never think of me should a vacancy or placement comes up, and in this field it is all about opportunities and links unfortunately. I have just spent the last half an hour crying in the toilets of the graphics department because I've been sidelined again with regards to a competition project that could lead to a job opportunity, and I feel incapable of the work, as if I will never be a 'designer'.
The thing that makes it sad for me is that working in fashion, specifically as a designer, is still what I want most, but i cannot go through this kind of self doubt constantly, but neither do I want to go home and end up working in a call centre, or doing somthing menial at Norwich Union.
I know loads of fashion baggers seem to have really interesting and varied careers, and it would be good to know how people got there, that just because I will have this particular degree, it doesn't close off other avenues to me, and that I can still be successful. Right now I feel dreadful, I want to jack it in, except that i know there are two months left and then at least i will be a graduate.
Sorry for the rambling post but any help would be appreciated.
Answer:
Can I say two things:
Firstly, there is a world of difference between working in a small company of four people, and working in a huge corporate place with four thousand people. I'm a secretary, but I'm sure it must be the same in the fashion industry. Maybe if you work for a small, up and coming company, the people could be a bit different.
Secondly, even if you end up for a while doing a non-fashion job, you have not wasted your degree. A lot of employers of all kinds look for "graduates", or people with an "arts degree" or "creative degree".
Answer:
I'm not sure if this is much help but a friend of mine from school studied fashion at uni.
She basically decided against going into a fashion career and after uni she first of all worked at a fancy dress / theatre costume shop and now does seasonal work for two companies. In the winter she does panto for 3 months which sounds like an absolute ball and then the rest of the year she does opera costumes for a very prestigious opera company. I've met her colleagues and it seems like a very fun place to work - hard work but laid-back at the same time. She absolutely loves it!
Other careers people off her course have gone into include fashion PR (one girl now does PR for ****) or retail buying.
I think the problem with that final year of uni is that in addition to the stress of finishing off your degree, you also worry about what's coming next. I think your best bet is to try and get work experience at different places and see what kind of environment you like best as it might open you up to things you'd never even considered before.
hope this helps!

Answer:
Ellie, are you at The London College of Fashion perchance?
Answer:
Final year on any degree is horrible because you don't know what's coming up. I felt exactly the same, but hang in there and do your best, because like you say at least then you'll be a graduate.
As Pandoraboxes says there are loads of things you could do with a fashion degree, the industry as whole is saturated with people trying to get into it, but that doesn't mean you can't! People told me that about what I wanted to do and now I'm doing something I really enjoy that uses my degree as well, from an off-the-cuff opportunity. You really don't know what is going to come up, so if you send out enough feelers you really will get something eventually.
I know how you must feel having a tutor who you don't think believes in you, but don't let it get you down, there's not long to go now and it would be a shame to let three year's work go to waste by letting demotivation get to you at this stage.
ps Pandoraboxes, I bet your friend loves her jobs, how cool!

Photo posting
Hi, it's actually really easy, but not very obvious.
Click on "Post to this Thead" as usual.
Write your message, then below the light blue Options area, there is an "Attach file:" part.
Click on Browse and select your photo from wherever you saved it on your computer.
Then submit reply.
When I preview the photo isn't there, so you just have to submit once you've browsed and seleted!
Hope this actually is the same for everyone!
Answer:

Slightly O/T Monsoon Returns Policy
NO.4. ask :
Slightly O/T Monsoon Returns Policy
Hey everyone, im new
I bought a dress from Monsoon for a wedding in June. Its lovely but I have been doing loads of exercise lately and here in my dream world, I think its possible that I may loose enough weight for it to be a bit big for me by the day of the wedding.
The receipt says refunds or exchanges within 30 days, any advice on if I need to swap sizes after 30 days has run out?
Answer:
Hey there
Monsoon will allow you to arrange an extension on your receipt but you normally need to do it when you are buying an item. The best thing to do would be to go and ask in store.
If you've already taken the tags off the dress and you're outside the returns period don't be surprised if they don't play ball. You could always have the dress taken in by a dressmaker if you have lost the weight by June.
HTH
Answer:
Thanks
I havent taken the tags off or anything, ill pop back in on my lunch break next week and ask for an extension on the receipt.
On the other hand, this could be used as a good excuse to keep up my green and blacks addiction for another few months.
