Acute Morphine Poisoning

Ask:
Acute Morphine Poisoning
One day post-op for neck surgery on C3,4,7 & T1 with titanium cage enclosure plus removal of multiple bone spurs on spine (front and back incisions), my husband was rushed to SICU due to acute morphine poisoning because of PCA by Proxy (his mother).
His resuscitation required three different attempts with three different medications. My husband was in SICU for 5 days and endured horrible withdrawals.
Why did he have withdrawals? What are possible complications of acute morphine poisoning? My husband has been discharged from the hospital, but his neurosurgeon is reluctant to prescribe anything to effectively manage his pain.
Any information you could provide about acute morphine poisoning and the after effects will be greatly appreciated. Thank You for your time.

Hi,
Heres one link regarding Morphine:

You may use the search tool at the top of the forum and get related links too.
Sorry your husband had to withstand such an ordeal.
Bests wishes for him and if he is still having pain his caregiver if he is unable to do it should ask his dr. an alternate pain medication and she should follow the dosing exactly. You could also talk to his dr about having maybe a RN come to his home and help his mother in giving medications and making sure the Dr.s orders are being followed. Medicare and some insurances will cover this short term if Dr. ordered. Or have another family member get involved too. He should be as pain free as possible and within reason by a competent caregiver.

Thank you for responding ... but I have already visited numerous sites concerning morphine. None have answered my questions. What would be very nice is to get answers to my questions from my husband's doctors, but they are avoiding him. All of their answers are measured, and seem rehearsed. This ordeal and the aftermath is very confusing and upsetting for us both. We have certainly lost a lot of trust, respect and faith in the doctors.

I believe your question was why did he have withdrawals and that is because of how morphine effects the brain receptors. Morphine is a very addictive drug and that is why it is only prescribed for certain conditions and for certian periods of time by a physician. If it is not taken exactly as prescribed and for short term use or deemed necessary by your Dr. addiction can occur which can lead to poisoning and severe withdrawal which often times will need treatment.

I think it would also be possible people to become easily addicted depending on their brains. If your husband is still having withdrawal symtoms which can be very serious he needs to obtain help from a pain clinic to manage his pain and the addiction. Maybe his dr. will discuss this with him.
