I was reading your post today. Children sometimes head bang or rock before sleep because its soothes them. My sister's son used to rock back and forth but never real hard or to hurt himself. It would be good of you speak to the childs pediatrician to rule out normal soothing that may be outgrown or developmental problems just so you know.

As Purple98lady said, its most likely nothing, as many children do it to soothe themselves, much as they do by sucking their thumb. Since children have trouble expressing themselves with words, he may bang his head to assuage his discomfort, such as if he's teething. I would have him taken to the pediatrician if he's otherwise symptomatic, such as showing other signs of ear infection, headaches, etc. In very rare cases in may be a sign of autism, so I would look for other typical behaviors such as lack of pointing, lack of gaze-following, or lack of pretend play, before you worry too much.
