Ask:
Skull fracture from a fall while walking?
4 Attachment(s)
Two days before Christmas my 18 month old daughter tripped and fell in my in-laws garage. She hit her forehead on the edge of a cement step. It bruised and swoll up immediately. It looked terrible, but my mother-in-law said she had taken one of her 4 kids to the ER with a similar injury and it was nothing. My daughter did not lose consciousness, have any vomiting, or motor problems, and once I stopped trying to hold ice on her head she went back to her normal play and activity level. By Christmas morning she had 2 black eyes to go with the bruised forehead. She looks fine now, but someone who saw our Christmas pictures said she could have fractured her frontal sinus. I've done some reading and have learned that she's too little to even have a frontal sinus cavity, but could a fall while walking cause a skull fracture? It has been 2 weeks, but should I take her to have it x-rayed? Would a doctor even order an x-ray just because I asked them too? What would they do for her if she did have a skull fracture? We are also flying home on Weds, would the pressure change on a plane cause her pain if she does have a skull fracture? I wish I had gone with my gut and just taken her to the ER when the accident happened! I'm trying to attach a picture of her.

hi rvoitier,
Welcome to the forum! I share your concern for your daughter--that must have been pretty frieghtening. I'm not an expert, but conceivably I think hitting her head could cause a fracture, but I think the fact that she went right back to normal play and looks fine now probably bode wells for your daughter. However, it never hurts to get checked out by a physician if you're concerned. The head and face is pretty vascular, so even minor injuries can lead to a lot of bleeding, bruising, and swelling. The change of pressure on the airplane can cause swelling, but this can occur wheater she has a serious injury or not. I'm sorry I can't be of any more help, but its difficult to determine without seeing her directly. Best of luck and keep us posted.

:) Hi rvoitier,
I agree with YankeeBeckham. If it were me though, I would have her seen anyway by a physician to put all worries to rest. Good Luck to you.
