Ask:
Going to the Doctor
Going to the doctor can be a very stressful experience. There are many reasons why we might not go to the doctor when we ought to. As for me, I'm not always optimistic my problem will be resolved by visiting a physician. I'm also not a fan of being poked and prodded. What keeps you from seeing a doctor when you should?

:)Good Question and Poll,
Fortunately I can say I haven't had to visit the Dr. except for routine yearly tests etc., These I find bothersome but necessary. One surgery I did have I knew what it was and had it repaired. I really don't mind going if I feel the need to though. Also its good to have been blessed with good genes, most of my ancestors died from old age. While this isn't a sure fire protection plan I really believe it helps. I also have worked with many of the Dr's in the group I go to, so I feel comfortable with them.

I have experienced both the good and the bad. I realize doctors are human and make mistakes. I would say now I have a fear of going to the doctor. Why? Well I was a victim of domestic violence and experienced judgement from a few doctors. I was even told "You must enjoy being slapped around." I understand doctors are not there to counsel or help with the emotional part, but at times I was treated like it was my fault, judged, blamed etc.
I can recall one time I thought I had a head concussion after a beating and headed to the emergency ward in the middle of the night. A female doctor looked at me and said "you are fine" handed me a prescription for pain killers. I left taking her word, but actually did not feel fine at all and tried to explain to her. I headed home, but by morning felt worse and went to another hospital. Turns out I did have a head concussion, CT scan was fine, but they kept me in overnight.
Another time I was in hospital, one of the nurses said to me "I get sick and tired of women like you coming in to the hospital with injuries. In fact the medical field gets tired of abuse victims coming through their doors!" I understood maybe she was frustrated that us victims sometimes do not leave their abusers right away or not at all, but at the same time it doesn't make you feel very good.
But putting the bad aside, I did have one wonderful doctor, who unfortunately is now retired. He was a specialist and often treated my injuries, sometimes on short notice. I never expected him to do this, but he did. He always lent a listening ear and basically saved my life, gave me the strength to leave my abuser.
I still have health problems from the abuse, such as I am now partially deaf in one ear among other things. Seems that everytime I have to see a doctor, I feel quite anxious, even though I am out of my situation. And if my problem stems from the abuse, I feel even more anxious having to explain how this problem started etc.

It is indeed a positive thing you had such a caring Dr. who cared and helped you to leave this unfortunate lifestyle. Bravo for you.
There is still alot of just plain ignorance, in all professions regarding abusers and the abused persons. The more of us that try to understand the complexity of abuse the more we can be less tolerant of it.
Take care,

Thanks! I agree, many people in all professions are ignorant to this issue. More awareness needs to be put out there. I think people assume certain things about abusers and victims. Like victims enjoy being beaten, why don't they just up and leave. Easier said than done, especially if you haven't been abused and maybe don't understand.
Thank goodness I had a caring doctor who in my eyes saved my life, gave me the encouragment to leave my abuser. Even after I left him he still asked how I was doing and said if you have problems come and see me right to the end until he retired. I can recall him being very angry one time and he said "Maybe I need to get involved, do something about this, what is the name of this boyfriend of yours?!!" His eyes were full of fire. I thought whoa he is mad, but I knew he was concerned. I still had problems with my ex after I left him, he would stalk, harass, follow and a few times attacked me. Well the police are involved now so eventually I will have to go to court. I have medical evidence, so that will help. I am just glad to be away from him because I knew he was going to kill me one day.

I have been lucky, the most I waited was a half hour but the doctor had an emergency, understandable.
