I'm sure alot of people have heard of some off the wall remedies for sickness. I was reminded of a couple when speaking to a very elderly lady the other day.
I remember my mother said as children for cough and congestion there was a mixture of sugar and just alittle kerosene kept in a dish. You were supposed to just put a little mount on the tip of your tongue and this was to help stop the cough. Believe it or not she is very healthy today in spite of this remedy. ;)
While visiting a patient at home one day I noticed a white sock filled with onions and garlic laying on her chest. This her daughter said is for congestion. Nice I said as it was certainly clearing my sinuses. ;)
One more as I was leaving this house when shutting the door I cut my finger on the weather stripping, I was reaching for alcohol she went searching for cob webs saying wait this will stop the bleeding. I had already cleaned my cut and wrapped it as to get out of this remedy but thanked her anyway. :)
Back then medical attention was not that easy to obtain or so advanced as it is today, I'm sure there are many more remedies out there. Thanks for viewing and share if you dare. ;D

Kerosene for stopping cough: Fiction. Kerosene, when inhaled, can cause cough or even pneumonia
Garlic and onions placed on chest helps congestion: Fiction. Garlic may have some medicinal, beneficial properties, when ingested, but not in this way. Great for keeping vampires at bay though.
Cobwebs to stop bleeding: Unknown, probably fiction Spider webs are made out of proteins, and many natural proteins have effects on blood clotting. I don't know that spider web proteins do, but I can't say for sure they don't.

I'm a big fan of bloodletting and the four humors. I for one am excited to see the return of leeches to medicinal use.
The ancient belief of the soul residing in the liver is also one of my favorites. After all, the liver is huge, and what other use could a funny looking thing like that hold other than a gateway to eternal life?
