thyroid mass

Ask:
thyroid mass
Just want to say , glad to find a site on medical opinons / concerns.
My question is, why should a biospy be done on a mass, even if the doctor tells you it needs to be removed? Just cut to the chase and get it out...biospy when you take it out,
If its apporaiate to list signs/sym and up to date testing will do...
hope some one can help me on this question..
I have concerns and worries,as well as my family doctor.
thanks so much.........

Hi meya,
Welcome to the forum. I'm sure you will find it very informative and friendly. Please check out the search tool to view Dr. Joshua's pages on any topic as well as the web. As far as your question on pre biopsy a mass before removing it. Its good to know what it is and many times this is a stipulation by the insurance company to justify the operation to remove the mass. Hope this helps.

Hi and thank you for the response and welcome.....
No it isnt for insurance, as I have no insurance and that along has made it a problem being seen by some Doctors, it's sad but true..
In fact my family Dr seems to thaink the same thing, He is concerned about it cause my throat, or lyrax(sp) is involved thryroid meds or not helping at all..the lump is solid and not round but somewhat oval with a branch off, it is solid, not cyst, and in inch size it is about 3 inches, breathing , swallowing etc is hard, lots of more swelling occuring everyday...
But he did get a doctor to see me, even though I dont have insurance, just self pay.....and they talked and still suggested...That it needs to be removed, but want a biospy first...
Iam hypo, any how thank you very mcuh..

I'm very sorry you have this and all this discomfort. Yes I understand its hard to find a Dr who will take you with no insurance. I'm glad you have found one. I personally feel everyone should have the right to health care regardless. I guess they want to see if it a thyroid goiter or some other kind of tumor. At any rate if its pressing on your larynx and causing difficulty swallowing or breathing I hope its removed soon. If it were me I would let them do it and then remove it . best wishes and let us know.

Thank you for your reply.
I went to the Doctor today, and will have the biospy done this Friday, and even at that, he did say that it would need to be removed, it is solid and fixed, and shows signs of cancer, along with sevral other things, as, my neck and shoulder lymph nodes or swollen, The mass, is pushing on my esphouas(sp) and on my lyrax, the 125mg of syntroid has not reduced the thyroid at all
I will keep you posted...
How long is one down when they have the surgery?, anyone know..

How long I guess would depend on how invasive the mass is, your general health, alto of things. One thing for certain it can't stay there and is being removed. Do keep us posted and very best wishes for a good outcome.

Dr. Joshua Thanks for your well thought out replies, Purple Lady.
Meya, I'm glad you are getting proper attention and getting the biopsy done soon. Biopsy is often very important before surgery, even when surgery seems inevitable, because the biopsy results will help your doctors plan the best possible surgical approach and adjuvant therapies for you. Please keep us posted and good luck!

meya hi
Thank you all, very much!!!!
I been playing tag with my password here, and finally got back in...so please know I have not been ignoring, just couldnt get in...lol
I had the biospy done, and surely hope tha I wont have to do that again, as I stated I had one done 11 years ago in June, and it was simple and easy...this one wasnt,
For some reason this time around, they stuck me 8 times and each time I felt like he was shking my head and just jabbing, dont get me wrong, the doctor was very kind and symphatic, ..He said they nornmally jsut do it 3 times now days, last time (once) but this one was a hard nut, ...he said that it had a hard core around it and it was very diffcult to get in, I said that has to be a good sign, ..they didnt tell me anything as of yet which I deem a good sign too.
have you are anyone ever heard of the type that is (has a hard core around it) hard?, and gives this trouble?...
I will keep you all updated and again thank you all so much..
hug

Dr. Joshua Thanks for the update. I'm glad you found a kind doctor, that eases the pain of having an unpleasant procedure done. Now we just have to wait for the pathology report, keep us posted
