a childs weight

Ask:
a childs weight
I have a set of twin girls that are 5 1/2. They are complete opposites. One is very petite and only weighs 35 pounds. My other one is the concern. She now weighs 72 pounds. She is very tall and growing up as well as out. Last February we had her tested for her thyroid and diabetes. Both came back negative. I was relieved and confused on what could make her gain so much over the last 2 years. Until she was 3 1/2 she was also very petite but taller than her sister. I have four children altogether and monitor alot of what they eat. They drink sugar free juice and 1% milk. Almost no soda and they dont eat a ton of sugary snacks. She is very active and loves to wrestle around with her brothers. My question is what else can I do for her? Do I have her tested again since it's been a year? Please give me as much advise as possible.

Hi kryals,
I'm sorry to hear about your problem. Has she had her pituitary checked? The only thing I can think of is some sort of disturbance there such as cushing's disorder. You can run a google search using the box in the upper left for more information. Best of luck and keep us posted!

Her weight is well above 2SD compared to the median in her age. Have you got a curve of her weight/height development plotted against her age? Is there a sudden turn in the curve? How tall is she?
As YankeeBeckham said, one possible concern is the pituitary, and in her case especially growth hormone (GH). I recommend that you make an appointment with a pediatrician to have her properly evaluated.

I had her tested about a year ago for diabetes and for her thyroid. they both came back normal? Should i have her tested again for those or can they test her just on the pituitary gland? I have another question...When she was about 2 1/2 she was jumping on the sofa and fell off and hit her head quite hard on our glass coffee table. The glass did not break as it was like an inch or two thick. She did have to have 5-6 staples to close the wound. I took her to the E.R. and she had no other side effects that we know of. Around that same age was when she started the weight gain. Do you think that hitting her head might have caused or triggered the change? If she is tested and it is the pituitary gland thats the problem is there medication that can slow down her weight gain? When she was an infant she was always in the 50% for her weight and 75-up for her height. I'm not sure on her exact height but i think shes over 40". I hope thats right. Its not just her belly that is growing her body in general is growing. Shes in a 13 shoe, she wears a 10-12 in clothing. shes the tallest in her kindergarten class. Shes very active, loves playing with her siblings and i do watch her food intake. she loves fruit and veggies. and salad. Please give me any more suggestions or information you can. I really appreciate your help!!!!

dont be too worried she may just be a big kid my son is 6 yrs old 4 ft 6 inches tall and only 52 pounds but the pedi says although he is extremely tall and thin for his age he is perfectly healthy maybe that just the way youre daughter is built so unless she is obese and has a lot of body fat dont stress too much
