Ask:
L1 compression fracture and future pregnancy
my wife (28) and i (37) were involved in a motor vehicle accident last thanksgiving. we hydroplaned and stuck a concrete highway divider at high speed, ~50 mph. we both suffered compression fractures of L1, my wife also had ligament damage to T12 along with a dislocated and fractured right foot. neither of us had any neurological issues. we were kept in the hospital for 4 days and were both fitted for bivalve braces, which we are currently still wearing. we were both told that spinal surgery would not be necessary, although it took some time for that decision for my wife. our physicians have both told us that we are just about done wearing the braces, and that once we are out of them we can begin physical therapy. we have both been told that we should be able to return to nearly all of our pre-injury activities.
my question is, will my wife's injuries to her spine cause problems/complications if she becomes pregnant? is there an ideal amount of time we should wait?

thanks for your response. we'll definitely follow up with my wife's physician on her specific case, but your answers are reassuring. we were kind of worried about it and she doesn't see her physician again for another month.
i have a follow up question, not related to pregnancy, but more to the different treatment styles we are receiving. we both have different physicians, mine is a neurosurgeon who also does spinal work, hers is strictly a spine specialist. at my last visit i was sent for extension and flexation x-rays of my spine, i was told if these look ok i can come out of the brace.
at her last visit, my wife was just given a regular standing x-ray and told she can begin to gradually remove the brace starting next week. she is concerned because all along she was told that her injuries were worse than mine but her physician doesn't seem to be taking the precautions that mine is taking.
any reason that you can see for the different approach, or is it just commonplace for our injuries to be treated differently by different physicians?
