Pain in thumb joint

Ask:
Pain in thumb joint
I am a 42 y/o typist and having intense pain in the carpometacarpal joint of my right thumb. (Repeative motion from utilizing the space bar when typing). At times there is a painful sensation of grating or a shredded rubberband tightness felt when moved, but this is intermittent. Bone scan shows minimal uptake. Steroid injections help minimally. The rheumatoid tests in the past are negative. My physician is perplexed and is suggesting fusing the joint. Are there other alternatives to fusion?

Welcome woohoub,
I would certainly hope so. That I guess would depend on exactly what it is, if treatment was started soon enough.

You might ask your Dr. about this and what he thinks.
Good Luck to you and let us know.

I had considered de Quervain's tenosynovitis after researching the Internet prior to posting the question. I'm currently waiting an MRI as a noninvasive approach and hopefully this will show the inflammation in the tendon(s) and not just the joint. I have considered requesting a second opinion before any surgical bone fusing procedure decision is made.

Good you have had the MRI and a second opinion never hurts. Good Luck
