I had feet turned outwards(genetic not arthritis), for as long as I could remember, saw a physiotherapist(I think) for it, they gave me special custom soles to wear, I wore them for about 2-3 years all the time, and it made a huge diffrence, I havent been wearing them for about 6 months now and I am noticing the problem is coming back again.

Hi painful1,
I have super flat feet which have caused some problems at times. To treat them, I had orthotics made from molds of my feet. They don't make everything better, but they do help quite a bit. Without them, walking can be very difficult at times. I also went to a speciality store to get fitted for running shoes that support my arches. There is also a way to tape your arches to give them more support, but I don't do that. Basically, I stay away from sandals, heels, going barefooted and only wear my running shoes or my cleats and am sure to put my orthotics in them. If not, I start having problems with my chronic compartments syndrome, achilles tendonitis, sciatica and a whole assortment of other fun problems. Another thing to be sure of is to make sure your shoes aren't worn down. If you start to wear away the bottom of your shoes, you'll protonate more, and have more problems. Flat feet can be a pain, but there are definetly things that can help. It might not be a bad idea to see a podiatrist or an orthopedist and see what he recommends.

Getting insurance to cover orthotics can be really hard. Mine would only cover them if I was diabetic, which of course has nothing to do with my feet, but its only condition they cover medical equiptment for. Kinda odd.
