Ask:
Possible stress fracture?
Hello, I am trying to determine what type of an injury I might have in my ankle and I thought this would be a good place to start for some opinions. Here is the problem. 6 weeks ago I began experiencing pain in my left ankle. Upon awakening, there is no inflamation, but there is tenderness on the inside area. When I take that initial step of a morning, something in the ankle and foot area pops several times. Throughout the day the ankle begins to swell on both sides and it becomes very painful to walk or even bear weight. The ankle does not want to move from side to side but up and down motion is not so bad. The toes move fine. I have tried a couple of times to massage the area but it's very painful. I have not physically injured this that I recall. I do stand for most of my work day and I have many years of hard tennis playing that I'm sure has contributed somewhat to today's problems. I did ice for the first 48 hours and have followed up with mild, moist heat but to no avail. In fact, this is getting progressivly worse and becoming extremly painful by the end of the day. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time... Lisa

LisaFree,
I'm guessing Lisa that you may have sprained your ankle. Sprains take awhile to heal also. But you should rest it or maybe a brace or ace wrap which supports it so your not using it so much to allow it to heal. Also arthritis changes can cause problems. Really you should see the Dr. for this to be sure and so your not doing unneeded damage to the rest of your foot.
Good Luck and let us know,
