Ask:
Spiritual process delays dying how?
Hello,
Got a question my favorite pal in the world died today. But the exception is she was not a human but a dog. My poodle of 14 1/2 years old has passed away after 3 weeks suffering Mammalian gland Cancer (her nipples became lumps). With eyes open, tongue to the side against the teeth she died today in my house. But before she went last 3 weeks she was severely bleeding. My house looked like a crime scene from all the blood. Even with having the sterile pads, hospital like blue diaper sheets changed often it did not matter. We been to the vet few times and don't feel like saying right now or if at all all the details again. This could be pages and pages long but not up for it right now. Do have few questions to ask. Since this is somewhat related to "mammals" and we are in that group. We share lots of common traits despite if the dog might be a 11 year old forever. So anything medical has its place in this thread. Despite if these forums are really made for humans in mind.
Question(s) to the doctor-josh or (helpers) as this is very analytical in psycological aspect and has spiritual binding. We will never know all the details of what goes on in a passing person or our pets. Yet I like some possible opinions to help me put some of this to rest. Keep the keywords of "dying process" in mind as my final question is based on it.
Questions in order:
1. My dog was very weakened from her cancer and the complications. Such as blood loss, metastasis etc. Yet when my mom was at work I spent the whole final days with her. But my mom comes home from work at 6pm and that day my dog (was critically ill). However she got up and started to sitting and knowing my moms time is approacing to come. So last 2 1/2 hours she seemed "more" well and looking at the door turing head back to stare at blank wall and repeat few minutes later. It seems like suddenly she was able to delay the dying process. (She never died that day anyway more below)
When my mom came home my pet got up to greet her. Later she went to her water bowl (she was drinking lots last few weeks seems kidneys were failing) but she also went to her water bowl and food bowl too under healthy times. When she was overly excited. When we came home it did not mean she was always hungry. But she would take few pieces and run with them. Anyway, that time she also repeated the happy process as much as she could and started to fall towards one of the walls. Like a collapsing human. I managed to grab her with both hands and slowly help her fall correctly so she would not hurt herself even more.
2. Last night (Friday 12:00 am) (as typing this at 12:52 am Saturday) so we are in new day. Um, she started to emit high "calling notes" even though my mom was around her. When I came to her, petted her she stopped calling. I left, she given more calls I came back from bed. Petted her and she was "content". She slipped few minutes after that into Coma assume so. As she was still breathing but could tell she went brain dead. She lived about 8 hours more. But I was so tired (mom said when she woke up at 8 am ) she was still breathing but obviously breathing harder. When I woke up at 9 am she was dead. Under the medical standards of what is considred dead. Where all processes stop and she was gone. She was still actually warm and her saliva was just turning to lquified glue. As she left her mouth open could see. We wrapped her in blanket and went to the vet.
Few things to note here:
* My pet waited to see my mom and have final moments with her a day before she died.
* My pet waited for me on her death day to pet her few more times. She did not stop calling until me and my mom were at same time in the room. When I left, she would call again until she seen me two extra times.
So:
If a person or animal is dying how is it so they are able to limitly delay death? Since by nature death is dominate over any form of control (the type that no science can aid in resurection). That is one can't stop an initiated process of death. But where spirtuality is involved she was able to both times set aside her impeding death? Ido not understand how she was able to beat all the pain death for a while. So this goes against the scientific laws. That is under certain death circumstances (terminal illness) it can not be reversed. Yet here we see the delay of death.

This was an interesting read but does notexplain it:
"The other dynamic is the emotional/mental and spiritual area which is a different process. This is where the spirit of the dying individual begins to slip away from its immediate environment and attachments. This release tends to follow its own priorities when it comes to letting go; of family members, unfinished business of a personal nature and/or unreconciled problems. You have all heard people tell how someone on their death bed refused to let go until a certain member of the family was able to get there. Even when the body is trying to shut down the spirit hangs on until a resolution is reached. It is as though the dying person needs permission to go; needs to feel that he has achieved the support and acceptance of his fate by those he leaves behind."
I hope that I made sense I am having terrible time with words right now. It is personal my memory is slowly getting worse. After today, accelrated, Hey I am not that old yet!!! {after griving for a bit hoping to try to work on my invention (I was also enrolled in electrical engineering at one point) My point is, I am not a stupid person. Even though I am using me as a reference point. Other people would agree with me on this who are around me. LOL I am not suffering by medical definition (nor taking any drugs). But I know that memory is getting worse. As it getting more difficult to make structed and correctly phrased sentences. Sometimes like "What is it called" "I forgot" "I said?" "I placed it here?" common symptoms of the alzemers people. But at my age it has to be laughed at.
My dog was a big booster in some cases, and loved her very much. She aided me in trying to regain my memory from collapsing. This going to be a setback again in trying to keep memory sharp or bring it back to way it was before. Might get a cat? will be easier for busy schuduals For anyone that ever had a pet (not just dogs) know the benefits of them. The joy they bring to our lives including the terminally ill people. In fact some use dogs for various treatments. Their affection, warmth loyality words can't describe being around them. :-)
Dogs are not stupid animals but of course this is an opinion. But being with a dog so long can see that they actually have a "self". They might be a little slow and never grow up. But hey, it is a dog and can not be compared to a typical human.

Sorry for the loss of your pal. I love dogs, too, and I know how attached we get to our canine friends.
As for the question, it is indeed a well known phenomenon in humans, that the will to live, unfinished business, and so on, may seem to postpone death for surprisingly long periods of time, and many times, especially with chronic illness, death seems to come when the person feels ready. Part of this I'm sure is in the way that we the remaining see the events afterwards. Humans have a tendency to rationalize things, and especially in times of crisis, there is a strong need to organize the events in one's mind, to have an explanation for the events that occurred - this is also part of the process of coping with loss.
Having said that, I do believe there are some physiological mechanisms at work that can actually either postpone or hasten death depending on the will to live. Perhaps there are some hormonal changes that occur in such cases. We know that stimulants can prolong survival in some extreme situations, and the human body is certainly capable of producing very potent stimulants such as dopamine and adrenaline. To me, mind and body are one, so there is no reason not to believe that the mind, or spiritual process as you call it, of a dying person can influence the course of events.

Sorry for your loss, I remember reading in a magazine an interview with an ER surgeon who works in areas of war(his surgical theatre is a tent out near a battle field). One thing he mentioned is that adults had a lower mortality rate because they were better at fighting death, he said children (most of the time?) do not know you have to really fight it when your in critical condition, animals have great instincts so I dont have any doubt your poodle held off until she thought the time was right.
