Ask:
Anesthesia, Twilight or General?
I have a question regarding anesthesia for surgery. I underwent a small volume liposuction surgery and was promised ‘Twilight Sedation’. I was told I would feel very sleepy and that I would not remember anything about the surgery. I also was told that this was better than General Anesthesia, safer and more comfortable and without the risks associated with a General. The Doctor said I had ‘Twilight Anesthesia’ but the Anesthesiologist said I had ‘General Anesthesia’, not Twilight. A Medical friend said I had neither. What did I have? Here are the particulars.
I received the following drugs through an IV: Reglan, Decadron, Glyco, Propofol, Ketamine, Mepridine and Medez (sp?) and something written as ‘LR’ throughout. Routine life support monitors were established with nasal O2, EKG, blood pressure cuff, etc. My eyes were taped shut and early in the procedure, an LMA mask was inserted. I also had local anesthesia with Tumescent technique for the liposuctioning. The surgery was 2 hours and 45 minutes long and I was in recovery for about an hour. My Anesthesia report indicated ‘GA’ as this was circled in the section labeled ‘PLAN’. The other choices, ‘MAC’, ‘EPIDURAL’ and ‘SPINAL’ were not circled or otherwise noted. What kind of Anesthesia did I have?
Thanks so very much

Anesthesia, Twilight or General?
Hi Diane,
Welcome to the forum.
I'm not the Dr. but it sounds to me as if you had general anesthesia at some point. You mentioned a LMA mask which is a mask with a tube, easy to insert and maintain your airway for only a couple of hours. This is used for general
anesthesia or an endotracheal tube for airway patency.
But why the local too? Maybe for post op pain I really don't know. We need a dr's opinion . lol

Thank you so much for your response! The local is just the usual part of Tumescent liposuction, It is basically lidocaine with a vasoconstrictor to prevent bleeding, I believe. It is done the same way regardless of the type of anesthesia. It does provide about 16 hours of pain relief after the surgery. Some Dermotologists use this with nothing more than a valium for anxiety during the procedure. My Doctor promised me twilight anesthesia because I didn't really want to be aware of what was going on during the surgery, but I didn't want to go under a General either. A few people who have seen my anesthesia report seem to think it was a general anesthesia. I would like an expert opinion on this if I can find one but don't know how to go about this. It is a perplexing issue. Hope someone can shed some more light on this.
Thanks!
