Ask:
Hoarse voice since 13
Hello, just thought I'd post on this forum to see what the general opinion on my condition. Since my voice broke around the age of 13 i have had a hoarse voice- as i am 20 this year, its been nearly 7 years.
Just a bit of background- i also have a twin who also has a hoarse voice- could it be down to genetics (even though there is no history of any problems in the family). Drinking alcohol seems to agitate the problem, as well as talking for long periods of time.
Thanking you in advance,
Iain

Hi Iain,
Sorry to hear about your difficulty. Can you tell us a little bit more about it? When is it worse? What do you do for living? There are many possible causes for hoarseness. As this has been going on for a number of years, it may not be bad to check in with your doctor about this.

hi, thanks for your reply. Its usually worst in the morning and improves after exercise such as football. I'm a student but has remained consistant over the past 6 years.
If i went to the doctors what are they likely to do- will they have to operate or is it a quick procedure and how long will it take to recover?
Thanks once again.

Do you have allergies? If its worse in the morning it might be due to post-nasal drip, which is from mucus dripping from the back your nose and accumulating in your throat, which can make you hoarse. Its just one possible cause out of many. If you went to the doctor, he would probably take a history and do a physical exam. Then, based on what he found he would recommend possible treatment plan. I would think it would be highly unlikely for you to need an operation, especially as a first resort. Most cases of hoarseness aren't too serious, but you'll only know for sure if you see a doctor.
