Ask:
Need info on Dx of MS
Approx. 10 years ago I developed sudden diplopia and was evaluated at the local ER. After the standard neuro exam, I was referrred to have an MRI. MS was suspected. After doing some research, I scheduled appt. at the Mellen Center at the Cleveland Clinic. MRI showed several small lesions. Neuro exam was also indicative of neurological problems. Lumbar Puncture normal. Blood work normal. CBC,Thyroid function, etc. I have had ongoing probs with severe fatigue and numerous other difficulties. In the past several months, I have developed incontience, (neurogenic bladder), not emptying bladder fully, visual disturbances, such as increased blurriness. as if looking through a lace curtain. I have had tinnitus and hearing difficulties, which have been tested by an audiologist in the past 2 weeks. Told that I have a moderate, high frequency hearing loss, bilaterally. My muscles fatigue quickly with activity. At rest, I get cramps in my legs and forearms that are excruciatingly painful, but do not last for long periods of time. I have also had, what I believe to be BPPV, (positional Vertigo), due to dizziness that has been present for ther duration of time as other symptoms. This occurs when looking up or to the side and when eating. At present I am taking Provigil and Prozac and a B Complex. The provigil does not fully help fatigue, but "takes the edge off" My condition is having a negative effect on my personal and financial situations. I had an MRI on 4/06/07, with no change. But my health is deteriorating quickly. Approximately 4 months ago, I had an expeience, where my arms went numb and I could not control them. ie; picking up dishes. The residual effects of this lasted for about 24 hours and caused weakness in arms and hands and extreme fatigue. I am battling bronchitis/pneumonia at present and have been on antibiotics (Z-Pack) for 2 days and feel no significant improvemernt, though some. When relaying symptoms to neuro, they try to attribute to "possible other things". I can not relay the significance of how terrible I feel and the stress that this is causing in my life. Any input or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi cindi01,
Welcome to the forum. I'm sorry you are having all these symptoms. How recent have you been examined by a neurologist? MS is not so easy to diagnosis and its important to have a experienced neurologist.
Also too medications can cause wierd side/effects. You stated you are on Prozac,Provigil and B-Complex. There are other conditions that have your symptoms and not just MS. Depression alone has many symptoms, stress and anxiety disorders can cause nurmerous symptoms.
Try to stick with one experienced neurologist and let him work through this with you. Has your Dr. encouraged any psychotherapy, mental health evaluations. Bio-feed back and group therapies are also helpful.
This is very stressful and often all aspects are evaluated to cope with your many symptoms. Good Luck to you and keep us posted.

I see. What is his opinion in any further tests. Have you had your vision checked as well?

A tensilon test has been recommended in the past and I do wear glasses. I have bifocals and prisms to help with the diplopia. I have an appointment with my neuro on Monday, 4-30-07. Do have any suggestions that I could discuss with him?

Yes I do, I would ask him for a daignosis or plural there of. You stated when you relay your symptoms to him he attributes them to other things. What other things and what other testing does he feel might be in order to come to a diagnosis.
Maybe electrodiagnostic testing, or even a myelgraphy if your MRI and cat scan show nothing. Also further testing for MS, Fibromyaligia, and maybe you should have the tension tests as recommended. With such large array of symptoms your neurologist really needs to give you a diagnosis or do further testing to obtain one. Good Luck
