Please take no offence to this post. I put this on most computer posts until it can be added to the help bot. People asking for Computer help please read. To be able to help you we need to have more detail than "there was an error and now the computer does not start" with that information there is no way that we can help. here is a list of information that if you send along then we can help better. -what operating system(what windows ie: xp, vista, 98, etc.) -desktop or laptop. -make and model -any error messages exactly as they were displayed. -any odd noises, or smells that have ocoured since the problem. -let us know if you have installed any new hardware or software since the problem. By posting this information the first time round we don't have to ask and can resolve the issue faster. Basicly we need more info in most cases. just something to keep in mind.

Oh, my bad. Well here's what I know: Operating system: Windows 98 Laptop (like I said in my post) Model:75164708K Toshiba (like I said in my post) No error messages So odd noises, but the area around the keyboard is scalding hot. Haven't installed any hardware or anything. This came right out of nowhere.

OK, there are two main alternatives: 1) the laptop is giving problems, i.e. the USB port has no power. (I take it that the cooler is USB powered?). Doesn't your Toshiba have two USB ports? Test the other one! Or test the same port, but with something else that requires power. (My laptop closes an USB port when it is overloaded by something taking too much power, but it reconnects it when I restart). 2) The cooler has a malfunction, hopefully just a contact issue. But a cooler is very cheap, at least the type that you place the rear end of the laptop onto. One way is of course to bring your laptop to the shop, and test another cooler. If that works, your cooler is broken. If your cooler is new, ask for a replacement. I don't know if it is worth any repair hours to fix it, I would personally open it myself to see if I could find something to fix. The fans themselves are fairly good and are not likely to break down soon, at least not both of them. So I guess it's something simplier. In the meantime while finding out, place your laptop so the air can pass underneath it, and don't block any air intakes. And don't leave it running when you don't use it!
