I need some advice on torrent files

Ask:
I know what they are and how to open them my question is Can opening one destroy a computer? I opened or downloaded one a few months ago and soon after my computer crashed, the tech at the repair shop said that it probably crashed because of the torrent. I do not believe this and want to confirm my belief is correct. Can someone eirther confirm this or tell me that it is butkis?

Answer:
Do you happen to know the file you downloaded?
Answer:
Ohh and btw did you complete the torrent? And yes it is very possible. A torrent can be anything.
Answer:
umm no, a torrent cannot be a virus or anything that can crash you computer. Maybe the file that the torrent was linked to could have crashed your computer
Answer:
I guess i should of worded that differently. What i ment was if the torrent wasn't complete it wouldn't be the torrent. Torrent files link to the actual file. Like ethan.t said you can't get it from the torrent file, but the file you downloaded through your torrent client is very capable of being one. Just scan it before using it. If you are new to torrents check out http://www.utorrent.com/beginners-guide.php
Answer:
If you intend to continue using bitorrent networks, but are worried about further virus infection, you should try googling "Peer Guardian 2" It's a program designed to throw the authorities off when downloading illegal software (boo, illegal software downloading) but it also blocks known sources of adware, spyware, and viruses which are frequently included in torrents of popular downloads. It's not 100% foolproof, but it's handy.
Answer:
Captaincalcium made me think of a neat program along the same line. It is for browsing anonymously. It is a modified firefox browser called Torpark. It is made by some very nice hackors. Not the kind that are bad the kind that are good. These guys are human rights actavist and even have a patent that allows citizens to take legal action agaist governments that don't allow it. Just have to read about it to understand. anyways here is the link to the program http://torpark.nfshost.com/ and here is a link to their main site http://www.hacktivismo.com/
Answer:
Thinking further along the lines of hactivism, it may be worth your while, just for the fun of it, to start encrypting all your sensitive information and outgoing e-mails with the free version of PGP desktop, which is an extraordinarily good all-purpose encryption system, which can be downloaded (with limited functionality) for free from their website. The idea is to protect privacy by making encryption universal. In much the same way as almost all real mail is sent in envelopes, the encryption protects personal information, financial details, etc. from government and private eyes not only by its encryption, but by the sheer mass and number of encrypted files. Now, to send an encrypted email is basically to shout "Hey! I'm doing something I don't want you to know about!" But if everyone encrypts everything, there is no way of finding out who is doing what, and the right to privacy is protected.

Answer:
-I was using a uTorrent program to download this and that from the internet. -Recently I accidentally pulled the wrong power cord and OUT went my computer; the uTorrent program was running at the time, it was downloading. When I powered up my computer and soon had problems with the files I had been downloading via uTorrent. I tried to transfer one particular files over to another location on my computer and suddenly my CPU usage went up to 100%. While that was happening I tried carrying on ordinary activities like opening a folder or a file somewhere on the computer, folders not related to the uTorrent files folder location: WAIT AND WAIT AND WAIT ... - This is an example of why you might be having problems.
