Conserving electric ?

Ask:
Okay, today we got a letter from our electric supplier. In Jan. our rates (meaning all their customers) will go up 3.29 cents per kilowatt-hour. Their example was if your bill is aprox. $135.57 per month your new bill will be $162.03- YIKES!

Here is our situation. We have a propane Heater, we quit using it 2 years ago cause when price of propane was going up it cost us over $900 from Nov-April- not including the electric bill (we kept the house at 62 degrees- on really cold nights we would use our radiator heaters). Needless to say, we quit using our heater and purchased a kerosine heater (last year it only cost us aprox. $200 to heat our house) that we used while we were awake- at night we used radiator heaters- only cost an extra $50 on top of our usual electric bill. Well, I am getting nervous about how high our bill will be- we don't want to go back to propane- it is even higher than when we quit using it.

Any ideas on how to conserve energy? I already hang most of our clothes to dry (except jeans- they just feel too weird for me!), unplug most unused items- is there any tricks to you conserving energy?

Thank you for posing this question! I would love to hear some suggestions on this, too. (Sorry I couldn't be more helpful!)

We changed all the light bulbs to those spiral ones. and we use small app. to cook or we grill out. I have gotten really good. We put plastic up on the windows. ( all on sell last year) we put blanks under the kids and afew on top. they think it is fun. I heat my home the same way. I get up early to warm the house before the kids get up. and lastly I go to the laundary mat to dry 1 or 2 aweek. every little bit helps.

My bathroom fixtures use 6 bulbs so I took out 5 and only us one energy saving bulb. I dont run air if I can stand it and when I use the oven I bake more than one meal at a time so I dontd have to use it again.

I am pondering this same question and am thinking about unplugging my spare refrigerator. We have our regular kitchen one and then a spare in the laundry room along with a chest freezer. I am figuring out that I do need some extra fridge space but not the whole thing and even forget about stuff I have bought extra of like eggs or cheese. I don't need the freezer part which is tiny anyway. So I may just unplug the spare for the winter since I grow a garden and have tons of fresh veg's to put in there in the summertime. I wonder if an electric blanket is less electricity than having our heat turned up? hmmm....
Answer:

try covering your windows on really cold days we do this when there is no sun out most of my windows have blinds with valances so i have sheets on them on the really windy and cold days. we also switched our light bulbs and i keep the lights off until it is to dark...i keep my house at no more than 70 degrees so everyone wears sweat shirts and socks and warm pants flannel or sweats while we are at home.
