make your own large Christmas tree skirt.

Ask:
I've been searching for the right Christmas tree skirt for years now. Many of the ones I liked were upwards of $50, and I could never find the right color or style on eBay.
Instead, I'm going to make my own, with little or no sewing.
For about $10 you can find a round tablecloth of nearly any color. Cut a slit from the edge to the center. If you're concerned about unraveling you might want to hem the edges of the cut or use iron-on hem tape. If desired you can use scrap batting (I'm using an old mattress pad/cover) stiched or ironed-on with fusible backing to the backside to give it some stiffness and body. It can be embellished with cording, ribbon, beads, etc, and the entire thing could be quilted if desired.

By the way, if you're not into tree skirts but want to cover the base of your tree, you can also do what my mom has done for years -- buy a few yards of fabric and just loosely wrap it around the base for a billowy free-form look.
Answer:

You do not even need to cut a slit in it-
how about just cutting a circle in the middle and put the tree trunk thru it before you put it in the stand?

You gave me a great idea- thanks I also have not been able to find one I liked.
Answer:

I quilted one my senior year of highschool in home economics..and still use it every year (we won't discuss how MANY years that is!!).
Answer:

I like that idea. I am a sewer and now thinking of great gifts for Christmas by doing that
