I am looking for chapter books for preschoolers that I can read to ds, he will be five in Dec. I want to get him interested in reading a 'continuing' story for a few weeks, one chapter a night.
The problem is, not many chapter books are set up for his age. Their content is usually more geared towards a first grader, where ds is still in preschool. I looked into the Magic Treehouse series, and found their content too 'much' for ds age.
Anyone know of a good chapter book or chapter book series for very young children? Thanks!!

It does depend on your individual child, but my son did indeed enjoy The Magic Tree House series at age 4. The other thing I did was get a number of books in the same vein, like 5 Dora books, Bob the Builder stories, etc. A lot of kids still get distracted easily and don't remember what happened last night in the previous chapter which is probably why that market hasn't really been tapped yet. I wonder if your local librarian knows of some, since they have lots of chapter books.

My son (5) loves the magic treehouse books. I found them on CD at the library, and need to buy the CD's because that works so well on the nights DH is working and I am dealing with the 1 or 3 year old and can't get in there to read.
He is scared of a lot, but hasn't been frightened by these books at all. He loves the adventure.

The Ready Freddy series or Geronimo Stilton sets are fun read alouds. Geronimo Stilton series uses different fonts/colors, designs on the pages to help kids stay interested.

Frog and Toad, Amelia Bedelia, Little Bear, these are beginner chapter book series. Arthur also has chapter books as well as Berenstein bears, not sure how you feel about Junie B Jones. captain underpants, although I have never read these I know lots of kids like them.

I read the chronicles of narnia to my ds when he was four. He did probably get lost a little here or there, but still loved it. We'd talk about the characters and I'd make bulgey bear (big) and reep a cheep (small) pancakes, etc. to keep him interested (Those are characters from the books) But don't start with the Magician's Nephew...it's too boring for that age.

I also recommend Little Bear books- they are great for that age (Barnes & Noble used to have a hardcover collection of the series for a decent price). My oldest (a girl) really enjoyed The Berenstein Bears (they have small chapter books for beggining readers). Also some Dr. Suess books are great for beginning readers!

I was also going to recommend Scooby Doo books. My ds really enjoys the Magic Tree house books. Do you have a local library? My son likes to go the library to pick out books and he will pick out one chapter book for me to read to him and then a few easy readers that he can read to me.
