Too early for baby food??? 4.5 mo

Ask:
Alright, so my 3rd baby, DJ, is 4.5 months old. Whats the earliest you gave your baby .. baby food??? He's been eating cereal for about a month or so now. He's eaten a whole box. I, personally, think he's ready for a little bit of baby food.. but wanted other people's opinion first. Whatcha think?
Answer:

Our ped has us start the babies on cereal at four months. If baby is tolerating the cereal well, it's probably OK to feed him some of the pureed things. I would just avoid those that can cause gas, because his tummy may still have a hard time with it. Nursing or formula should still be his major diet for awhile still, so you're just having him get use to eating anyway. Gerber has a chart on their website that is helpful in what to feed when. Just leave the meats till later because they're a bit harder to digest. Enjoy!
Answer:

Well IMO you are breastfeeding and that is all he needs, but I didn't give my girls solids till they were 9 months.
Answer:

My 4th is almost 6 months old. My Ped. told me at his 4 month check up to start cereal at not to give him any baby food until 6 months or almost 6 months. I started him on baby food about 5 1/2 months. She told me that the cereal and Breastmilk is enough until age 6 months that I could offer the cereal more times during the day if I felt he needed more.

"THey" say that starting babies on food before 6 months may be a reason why kids are having more allergies-
You may want to wait 2 more weeks and start him at 5 months.
Answer:

Thanks girlies. I'll prolly wait a month I guess.
Answer:

Both of my older boys started on baby food at 4 months. No allergies or problems for us. TJ (3 1/2 months) has already had a few tastes of some things and will start him with the baby food and/or cereal soon.
Answer:

Six months was the earliest for me. They have proven that it can cause food allergies if they are fed too early.
Answer:

My ped told me it was ok to start him on the 1st fruits and veggies at 4 months because by that age they're just HUNGRY. He did just fine on anything I gave him.
Answer:

My pediatrician also okayed first fruits and veggies at 4 months. Opinions differ from pediatrician to pediatrician though (my friends pediatrician says 6 months) and according to what I've read and heard, there are two schools of thought about when to start solid foods and whether or not it increases or decreases your risk for food allergies. Both of my boys are fine - no food allergies that I know of. I did three days of cereal (neither of my boys liked rice cereal) before introducing approved fruits and vegetables (homemade) making sure to wait the three days before introducing a new food to watch for allergies. It was never much, just a taste of new things. At that age breastmilk or formula is still the major source of nutrition anyway. You can always check to see what your pediatrician recommends but I would say you're probably fine introducing them now but it won't hurt him to wait until 6 months either.
Answer:

I bf, so I didn't start cereal until 5-6 months, 1st foods at 6-7 months.
