Black Tongue!!

Ask:
So my 8 mo old DS tongue has turned black. It looks like he's licked some newspaper. It's very odd. I've called the ped and he said that as long as DS is acting normal (he is), it's not a big deal. He said he didn't know why it was happening, though.

I was wondering if anyone else has ever heard of this happening! What do you think it could be??

I have been giving him prune juice at the drs recommendation b/c he's constipated. I just bought some regular prune juice w/ no sugar or additives instead of the baby juice. I only give him maybe 2 oz every other day. Do you think that could cause it???
Answer:

I have no idea! I've never heard of it. I did want to let you know, however, that pear juice also works really well for constipation. My twins have had troubles at times, and that always works really well for them! (Leah refused to nurse, so I put a tsp or two of pear juice in each bottle).

The pear juice wasn't cutting it for us, so we upped it to prune! I should probably alternate. But so far no blow outs, so that's good.

I just checked my medical dictonary on this and is said that black coloring on the tongue is usually just discoloration from foods or medicine. I'll bet it's from the prune juice.
Answer:

Thanks for checking your dictionary. I was too scared to google it. I was afraid I'd come across all kinds of terrible things and then worry about it! I guess the regular prune juice must be more potent than the baby stuff. We didn't have any tongue discoloration w/ that. Maybe I'll start mixing an oz of pear and an oz of prune or something.

Most likely this isn't going to help, but I thought I would offer it...I know the Pepto Bismal will turn your tongue and stools black. If you are nursing and have had any it might cause the same effects for him.
