How much homework?

Ask:
We just moved and at this district, my kids are expected to do more homework. It was really rare for my 1st, 2nd and 3rd graders at our old school. Here they are expected to read everynight (not a problem) and have math papers about every night and spelling homework. This is only after the first week. It seemes to be the norm though. Do your elementary age kids get much homework
Answer:

I read in a parenting magazine that they are only supposed to have 10 minutes per each grade. My ds is in 4th grade so he should have 40 minutes. But honestly, he usually has more than that, and he sometimes has less. It really does depend on what they are studying, and what they have coming up. I can only imagine what it will be like in middle school!!
Answer:

My son is in the first grade and has spelling to study for every week (test on Friday), a story that we read every night throughout the week (test on Friday), a math paper due on Friday and some spelling sentences due on Friday. Also, he is to read his AR (Accelerated Reader) books every night and take tests on them every other day.

We finish in about 30 minutes if we wait until Thursday night for everything, but we spread it out throughout the week. It isn't too bad.
Answer:

first grade- math 3x per week, AR book, thursday book with some wort of writing homework(once per week they have all week to finish). and they are expected to read at least 20 books per month. they will start spelling homework the last two months of first grade to get them ready for second grade where they have weekly spelling tests.

third garde- read at least 20 min per night 5 nights per week, math 4x per week, weekly spelling tests, there may be an occasional homework she didn't finish at school. she finishes quite a bit at school. the AR book she now does completely at school. sometimes she uses her free time to do extra homework.

This is pretty much the norm for my 1st grader. His math homework consists of practicing for 2 minute timed math tests that he has every other day. His teacher also told us that by the last marking period he will also have timed reading tests.
Answer:

My 4th grader has homework every night. Spelling words (even on those short weeks), math and whatever test is going on. To me it seems everyother year they have homework overload. I feel bad for them because when are our kids allowed to be kids? I don't recall having this much homework until the later grades (like 8th grade with no study hall- but then again, I was always quick with my homework).
