I know some people have a real problem with it, but I would say go for gift cards or cash. I would have LOVED to have gotten cash or gift cards when I was their age. Heck, I still do! That way, they can get what they want.
As far as a regular gift, I really am not much help there. . . sorry.

My mom used to do the gift card or cash thing, we loved it!! If your dd has her own car, you can buy her accessories for her car (steering wheel covers, c.d. holders that clip onto the Visor, car seat covers,air freshners,etc). The big box of junk food is a big hit with my dh!!
Does your 12yr old like models that he can put together? Those were a hit with my ds.

I would say cash. That way they can buy what they want. My mom one time took me shopping just me and her and I liked that we did lunch alone. We had a big family too I had 6 brothers and sisters.

I would have loved gift cards when I was 17. Gas gift cards, and movie tickets are a great idea too. My mom could never shop for me so I always new what I was getting clothes wise and we would always go shopping before christmas and she would buy and wrap what I pickefd out. I always knew what I was getting because she bought it with me, but I always loved and used what I got. The only thing I can remmber getting around that age was a digital camera.

sorry, but I had to laugh... there was no such thing as a digital camera when i was that age! :D
