Ask:
Well, girls, I think I get the worst Mother of the day--maybe of the week--award. Yesterday morning, I slipped down the stairs w/ DS in my arms. I tried to protect him and he didn't fall out of my arms, but long story short he ended up getting a small fracture in his femur. I'm not exactly sure how it happened--it all went so fast. We called the doctor's emergency number and the nurse told us to go to the Children's Hospital emergency room. So after much crying by the both of us, DS had x-rays and is now sporting a blue cast from the tips of toes to the top of his thigh. What a day.
I know it was an accident and there was nothing I could have done, but I still feel terrible. He's actually done surprisingly well today. I thought he'd be really fussy w/ pain. But he's mostly just frustrated that it hurts/is difficult to crawl. I've been holding him a lot and that seems to keep him fairly happy. I'm so thankful, my mom is going to make the 5 hr drive to help out.
I'm so disappointed--his Chistmas/9 mo pictures were supposed to be today, but I cancelled them b/c I figured he (and I) wouldn't be up for it. I was able to reschedule them. So now he'll have a cast on in all his pictures. This is NOT how I wanted to spend my baby's first Christmas!!
Answer:
Oh my! I'm so sorry your little one is hurt. But don't beat yourself up! It could've happened to anyone. Accidents happen. I hope your baby has a speedy recovery!
Answer:
I am glad that he is ok. How are you? It sounds like you took a good brunt of the fall. Children tend to heal quickly so hopefully this will be quick for him.
I hope feels better soon!
Answer:
I'm glad he's okay. I'm sure it will be difficult with a 9 mo old in a cast.
Answer:
It was an accident, don't think you're a bad mom! He'll be fine, you are the one who will hurt more from this!
Answer:
Thanks so much for your kind words and encouragement. I'm fine in all of this--not even any bruises. I'm doing a little better emotionally, too. It's just hard to know that your baby is hurting and there's nothing you can do. I'm just thankful that nothing worse happened to the both of us. And DH has been WONDERFUL through all this. And I'm thankful, too, that we live close enough to the Children's Hospital so we could just go there and get the highest quality of care.
Answer:
I'm so sorry this happened to you guys. It could happen to anyone, unfortunately. I'm glad you're still getting the picture done - it's his life at this time. He will get used to it in time, but I hope the healing goes quickly - usually does in kids. I know this is hard on you, too, having to hold him all the time. Sending positive thoughts to both of you...
