Baby born asleep

Ask:
I was wondering if anyone has heard of a baby being born asleep - as in alive and asleep. My Kaylee was born asleep and was asleep for the first 3 hours of life. She never made a big cry, but whimpered and would jump when we took her picture. My husband was born asleep too, so it didn't freak me out or anything. But I was wondering if this had happened to anyone else or if you have heard of what could cause this.

My midwife and her doctor have both never seen this. I tried googling it, but it doesn't come up with any infromation about my situation. Thx.

Answer:

my ds was born asleep. he woke up for a few minutes when they were trying to clear his mouth out and nose. but then went right back to sleep. they even tried to bath him, tickle him everything. he just wanted to sleep. and did so for about 3 hours and then he woke up hungry. i didn't take any painkillers either during labour.
Answer:

Kimberley, I'm glad to hear that someone else has experienced this. Mine was born at home with no pain killers or anything - all natural. Except she didn't wake up hungry, she was having stomach pains. It took almost 2 weeks before she would nurse or demand feedings - she just liked to sleep. A little too laid back.

Did they take the baby away to the nursery any longer than they would have if he had been awake? When my husband was born 24 years ago, they took him to the nursery for at least a day.
Answer:

From the traumatic experience of being born, or when babies experience pain, they go to sleep, where all is safe. But I don't think I ever heard of one actually being born sleeping.
Answer:

My son wasn't born asleep, but he was born blue. However after being revived and suctioned, etc., he still didn't cry. I was so anxious, but the Dr. kept assuring me he was fine. We have the video of him in the nursery, though - he certainly woke up during his bath and vitamin K shot. I regret that I didn't know enough to try to nurse him until over an hour later after I left the recovery room. I put in a strong request for that with my dd, and it went very well. She, however, was loud from the beginning, and hasn't stopped.
Answer:

Wow! I've never heard of that before, interesting.
Answer:

She had great color (9 and 10 apgars). She got her vitamin K shot...nothing but a flinch at most (but I barely remember throught the birthing haze). Then she took a bath and she was asleep, but she did kick like she was swimming. (She got to take an herbal bath with me in our bathtub 2 hours after birth). She loves bath time now, so I guess that didn't bother her enough to wake up. We had to express colostrm and feed it to her in a cup after she was born to get her to eat. We put her at the boob just a couple of minutes after birth and she wasn't interested. We weren't sepearted for more than 10 minutes the first two hours of life.
Answer:

My daughter was like this also but it was because she was low birth weight and her blood sugars were very low. We had a horrible scare with her and even the doctors were worried and had to intervene. It took a couple of hours and some forcible feedings to get her awake and alert, but she was fine afterward.
