Compact Fluorescent Bulbs??

Ask:
Do you know of any deals on the energy saver bulbs? I think they are the Compact Fluorescent bulbs I bought a 3 pack at Walmart and they were $9.xx for the 3. They are supposed to save energy costs, since they are a 13 watt bulb that gives 60 watt light, but for that price I might be saving money buying regular bulbs. Also, I know that they are supposed to last longer, but how much longer? I do like the light that they give off, so if I can find them cheaper and am actually saving money buying them, I would like to.
Answer:

The flourescent bulbs are much more expensive to buy at first than the regular bulbs BUT they will save you money in the long run. I started buying them about 10 years ago, just replacing some here and there and NONE of these bulbs have ever worn out. Not only are they less than 1/4 of the cost to run by wattage but they really do last a long long time. I have them in several lights around the house that I leave on at night when I'm gone. I don't worry about wasting electricity or the bulbs burning out since they are such low wattage and they last so long. Yes they are more expensive to start out but think of them as an investment that you won't be replacing for years.

I'm glad you wrote this. It reminded me that I've seen those flyers in the utility bill envelope. Good idea.
Answer:

We just bought 2 8 packs (60w) at Sam's for $13/each. My dh is on a kick to change all our lightbulbs.
Answer:

What is your experience w/them? There was a guy on the radio the other day criticizing them, saying they make things look flat and harsh.
Answer:

We use a combination of regular incandescent bulbs and compact flourescents. Since the compact flourescents are so much lowest wattage, I upgrade to a higher wattage equivalent. For instance, I never buy the equivalent 60w bulbs because I don't think they are bright enough. If my fixture will accept a 60w incandescent bulb, I may buy a 100w equivalent compact flourescent. I'm still saving money by using less energy but I'm getting more bang-for-the-buck.

I like the light from the compact flourescents. I think using all incandescent bulbs make a room too yellow. Compact flourescents are more blue.
Answer:

Cookie - I've noticed that they put off less light too. For us this is actually a good thing tho. Our overhead light in the l.r. was a bit too bright - w/the compact fluorescents it's a much softer light - and it takes a minute to 'warm up' too so we adjust easier.

I never thought of using a higher wattage in the fixtures tho. We may consider that...of course it *should* be 5 years before we have to replace them.
Answer:

We did the whole house. We got them from sam's. the light is just fine for us. This winter we have not turned on the heat at all. We for using keorsin. well I got our bill for this month. It is 75.00 Now we have a 4800 sq home. The meter has been read 3 times. we think it is funny.
they do work. I don't yell about leaving a light on as much.
Answer:

I have one in my reading lamp and I think I should switch back- seem too bright, however I have one in my den and It seems to not do the trick for the whole room. It must depend on the placement is all I can figure out.
