Ask:
What kind of paint finishes do you like and what kind of textured painting have you tried? Would you be willing to display your work here?
I am trying to get ideas for when we move in the spring. I don't always trust how the professionals do it....everything they do is PERFECT so I always get disappointed when I start off doing a project and it doesn't turn out the way the experts did it.
Answer:
I personally don't like anything sponged. I've seen too many people go overboard with it with weird color combinations, etc.
I did a fresco in our last home, where I did a base coat and painted over it with a darker color diluted with one part glaze. I really liked how it turned out, it was pretty subtle and looked like Venetian plaster.
I just did the Ralph Lauren suede in our bathroom today. It is drying as I type this! when that project is "done' I'd be happy to share pics.

I have sponged and stenciled, but it really wasn't for me. I wanted something different in our kitchen and went with crackle paint. I like the way it turned out except that I would have used the colors opposite of what they are. I wanted more red and that is what we used as the base color so you only see it where the cracks are.
If I can figure out how to post a picture I will.

Still waiting on those pics FRAZZLED!!!
Question ladies:
In our new house our dining room wall is deep burgundy. If we wanted to change the color, what color of base paint should we use? Let's say we wanted to tone it down a bit? Do we use white base paint or red base paint?
TIA!
Answer:
We did a fresco look in our bedroom over the summer and it turned out really pretty. A friend of mine is really talented with that stuff and helped us. We used a special roller that had two different pieces you used at the same time that helped mix the paint.
I tried sponging once - and quickly painted over it. It just didn't work out.

Base is a part of the paint color and is part of the mix when a paint color is made.
If you want to tone it down, you should just pick your color. You can either do
3+ coats of the new color (depending on how drastic the lightening is) or do a primer and then do the new color. Do you know what color you are thinking of going to?
Answer:
my advise is to wash the walls first and use a good quality paint!!!! It does make a difference. I do not like the real glossy look or the flat either. Egg shell is what I think we use. I stenciled once. Back in 1989. Personally, I think that is a little 80's and 90's. My opinion only, so please, no one take offense if you like stenciling. I do not like the sponge look, again, outdated. I like the washed out look. I also like beadboard installed half way up the wall, in the right room, with the right decorating. We have some darker, warm colored walls and we used a tinted primer. The paint guy helped us pick out a good tint to match. Also, I do not like the white, white ceiling paint. With our warm colors, I used a softer white on the ceiling. have fun!!!! michelle
