Search online for car comparison in the areas of gas usage (miles per gallon), and how reliable the car has been. There are tons of charts available. It'll give you an idea of what to look for. Don't get something that is noted for having transmission problems, etc. You'll probably pay for it later. We just bought a new car, but ended up buying it from DH's sister/parents so we didn't have to go out and hunt one down. Maybe someone else has some tips from experience.

Don't buy any add ons - gap insurance, rust proofing, extended warranty (too many loopholes, and it's rarely used and over priced). Invest in Consumer Reports' reports. Don't go hungry or tired. Work up from what you find out wholesale/invoice (which is not really the price they paid, with kickbacks, incentives and all) is, rather than down from the sticker, which is basically an artificial price. Get your own financing before making a commitment. Check your credit and KNOW YOUR SCORE.

The majority of the time you will get a better deal if you finance through a bank than through the dealer.
Call the library and ask for the information desk. If you give them the make, year and model of the car you are interested in they can look up the dealer price. (what they paid for it).
