Ask:
Since dh has the 22nd through the 2nd off, I am putting him to work! Our first project will be to paint the playroom from its boring white. I was thinking of making one wall a magnetic wall so I can put art projects, refrigerator Leap Frog magnets there, etc.
Has anybody used this stuff before? Does it work well? I have a friend here that did it, but she is out of town. If I remember right, she didn't have huge magnets on it so I wanted to see what it could hold.
Thanks.
Answer:
My friend in Canada did this. She made a chalkboard that is also magentic downstairs in her kids' playroom...it is the absolute cutest idea ever! She said it was really easy too!!!
I can ask her for more info if you like Claire.
Answer:
That would be great! I know it is an additive to put in the paint, but how well does it work. I am looking at just the magnetic portion, not the chalkboard type.
I just thought it would help with the school art projects which are overtaking my refrigerator!
Answer:
I did a magnetic chalkboard wall in our craft room. The magnetic paint was seperate from the chalkboard paint. I did three coats of the magnetic paint but the playschool letters and numbers I have do not stay on the wall. I am able to use flat magnets, the word magnets and kids have made some of their own magnets. It was not difficult, but the magnetic paint did seem to splatter more than other paint.
Answer:
My sister did several coats of this in her daughters' rooms... she said it was great in theory but didn't work out too well, it barely 'holds' a magnet...
Answer:
I had the same experience- after three coats of the magnetic paint, I am still disappointed in the outcome. Most magnets don't hold very well- they fall off, and that's without trying to use them to hold something up. I often see the paint advertised with a special "super strong magnet kit" you can buy. Now I know why- super strong magnets would hold much better. My dh explained that the paint has steel filings in it to attract the magnets, and so the overall holding power is only so strong and not evenly spread out. I only did a small area, and I'm glad. The paint is expensive. I probably would not do it again.
Answer:
we used it to do one wall in our basement playroom. My advice is to mix it up very well before you apply it. We put on three coats. It is grey in color. Then you can paint any color over top of it. We used a yellow. It is really neat. As far as magnets....we used lots of photo magnetic sheets which are not too heavy. i agree with other posts in that you can not put magnets that are really heavy....and thinner lighter flat magnets work the best.
I would purchase at either Michael's craft store or Joann Fabrics and use a 40% off coupon. When i purchased it it was only available in quart size.
If you ever want to do chalkboard paint I did that on the top of a long old coffee table that a friend was throwing away. The kids can actually sit at the table, low to the ground and color with the chalk...it is great.
Good Luck
