used clothes?

Ask:
Many of you say that you dont buy new clothes for yourself. I was wondering how you felt about the way you look. I have purchased a few things at yard sales or goodwill but I find that i dont wear them much becuase I dont feel good about the way they look. I dont know if its just my community or what but I feel like the only stuff we have at our goodwill is things strait out of 1982 or even older. I dont care about name brands but i dont want to look like I came from a disco.
Answer:

I buy used things all the time. But I make sure it is in good shape before I get it. I like things that are used but still look new, or almost new.
Answer:

Don't buy it if it is not something you like and will wear!!! Never buy something just because it is inexpensive!
Answer:

Ditto- make sure you love it before you buy it. At some thrift stores, the secret to getting great deals is to shop on Mondays. Lots of people drop stuff off on the weekends, so Monday gives you the best shopping choices.

I have bought used clothing that I love and have worn a lot, and some stuff that didn't work out. But it has been the same with new stuff. I recently gave away a sweater I bought new and wore one time. It shrank just enough in the wash to look OK but make me feel slightly uncomfortable wearing it. Rather than hold onto it forever, I packed it off to the Good Will. IMO- clothing is always a gamble, so at least if it's used I didn't pay a lot for it. Easy come, easy go.
Answer:

I only buy things that don't look like resale. Honestly. My wardrobe looks like any other suburban mom (old navy, gap, some trendy jeans, standard capri pants, sweat suits) and no one would know I bought used. Goodwill and stores like that don't usually have the nice things I get at yard sales... I go to nice neighborhoods (or at least a new development... there's always a lot of 'keep up with the jones' types there) and the moms get rid of brand new stuff.

This is slightly off topic b/c it's about kids clothing, but it illustrates my point. My neighbor was having a sale and she was pregnant with her 2nd boy. Well, she was getting rid of ALL of her boy clothing(used so gently it was in new condition) because she wanted her 2nd boy to have all new stuff! ??? What??? It was ALL name brand Gap etc... I could NOT believe it! Of course I bought almost everything she had at 50 cents to $1 buck a piece... it all fit my youngest son within a few months. She also had the most awesome maternity clothes... I could not believe she was getting rid of it (being pregnant at the time) but she just wanted *NEW* stuff! This is how some people think and I just cannot get over it.
Answer:

I don't mind wearing second-hand clothes at all. I've gotten some really great name brand clothes at a fraction of the cost. If anything, it makes me feel great to know that I didn't spend an arm and a leg on my wardrobe. Besides, if an outfit gets ruined at work, I don't get too upset, since I probably spent less than $10 on it.

My dh never shopped at thrift stores before meeting me. When he learned he could buy new or nearly-new items there, he was hooked. In fact, we traveled to my old town today and hit the Goodwill. He found a pair of GREAT-looking Tommy Hilfiger jeans for a little less than $5. There's no way we could afford those in the store. He also got 2 really nice pairs of slacks and a shirt. His wardrobe is full of great clothes - and we haven't bought him much at retail since we have been together.
Answer:

I have to confess with all my frugality, I don't buy used clothes. I will wear things that people pass on to me, but when I really have to buy an item of clothes, I buy it new, good quality, and from a store with an excellent return policy so that if it doesn't last a long time, I can return it (which is why I am so loyal to Landsend).
Answer:

I can't tell you the last thing I bought new...and even then, it would have come from a clearance rack. I don't feel "great" in anything...but I figure I can't afford the things that might make me feel that way...so why bother?!?
Answer:

Oh, dont misunderstand I buy a lot used, it seams that it doesnt usually work out. My salvation army is crazy, they had some very used walmart brand jeans that was marked for 12$. WTH, I can go to walmart and buy the same ones brand new for 15$! IT must be my area????

I dont care how many people have woren it as long as I like it and it's a fair price.
Answer:

i do both i buy new and thrift store i think you just have to keep looking and if you don't like it don't but it. and resale i try to buy the basics black shirt, dress, skirt. tan pans etc then i go to stores clearance of course and add tops or whatever to dress up the outfit, i get stoppes all the time about jeans i bought at goodwill they where 6.99 it makes me laugh! My husband is soooo the same way never would even stop into resale shops. but now does anyone heard of Plato's closet, we have one out here and it is a teen shop but the stuff is so cool and resale kids just don't care about getting rid of stuff lucky me!
