Small steps

Ask:
Today I realized we made a small step towards living more frugally.

We finished a bag of buns! I know this doesn't sound like much - but we have a habit of buying a pack for one meal - then the others sit and mold, then have to be thrown out. I noticed the open bag a few days ago - no idea when we bought it, but the buns were still good, so I made a point to make hamburgers tonight. (Finished a pack of them out of our freezer no less!)

Have you made a small step lately?
Answer:

Good for you. I always try to use up hamburger and hotdog buns some other uses

Garlic toast, deli sandwhichs, and of course peanut butter and Jelly my kids love them on the leftover hotdog buns!

Any other suggestions?
Answer:

Not a suggestion, but I am proud to say that very little leftovers where thrown out during Christmas. Every last bit of turkey was put to good use. All the ham was eaten, as well as the pork tenderloin (we had several meals with 10 people).
The only think "wasted" was some green bean casserole that went funky before it was eaten, but everything else was used up.
My next mission is to clean out the freezer! Needless to say, hubby looked at me funny when his lunch was potato wedges, brussel sprouts, dill pickles and vanilla moose! Very funny but he wasn't hungry at the end.

My small step of the day was making my shopping list- so i don't have to make any unnessecary trips to the store!

I make mini pizzas with leftover buns.. even when they're starting to get a little harder and not so soft and squishy, they work fine b'c they get toasted. Open them flat, and dress them up anyway you want. then bake at 450 for like 10 mins or so. Quick easy lunch, dinner, or snack
Answer:

I save stail sandwich bread for french toast or casseroles.
Answer:

When I cook a large roast like a turkey or a ham, rather than put the leftovers in the fridge for sandwiches, etc, I put them in the freezer for another meal. Last night I defrosted a ziplock of turkey and served it with box stuffing, box potaoes, cranberry sauce, frozen veggies, and a package of .33 gravy. What and cheap and easy meal.
Answer:

good for you it is a first step i used to do the same thing the buns would mold and i would have to go buy a new pack...we now use them up and nothing goes to waste one little step and your on your way!!!!

That's great. That use to happen to us all the time too and I would get so discouraged at the waste. Now I keep all our bread and buns in the freezer and just use what I need for each meal. I just heat it up in the microwave or toaster oven and they taste fresh because they were frozen while they were still fresh.

I also keep all of our bread and buns in the freezer and defrost what we need. We rarely if ever use a whole loaf of bread before it would get stale.
