Microfiber Furniture

Ask:
For those of you have microfiber furniture, what do you think about it? The sales people that I talked to love it (naturally) and some people I know who just bought it, love it, but I want to hear from those of you who have owned some pieces for awhile now. How well does it handle the activity of CHILDREN? How well does it handle the stains and spills? I know it's designed to protect against permanent damage but I want to know if that is for REAL?

We are also looking at leather furniture. Has anyone had any complaints with leather sofas or couches?

Thanks in advance ladies!
Answer:

I bought a microfiber sectional sofa-bed last year. It does wipe off easily but you have to be careful because the washing can leave water marks, they do go away within a few days though. I bought a dark olive green one so things like mushed grahm crackers show up clearly! My sil has a light tan one and all the dark food and dirt show up on hers. Leather is a bit more and does last longer Im sure, but not as comfortable to sit or rest on. HTH
Answer:

Can they be cleaned by professional upholstery cleaners (like Chem Dry etc) or do they require special treatments when they need to be cleaned?
Answer:

My sil has hers cleaned by the carpet cleaning people. Her kids eat and spill all over hers. Hers seems to be a lot thicker material then mine too. It almost looks like suede. Mine has been fine to just spot clean.
Answer:

We have leather furniture we bought before microfiber got popular. We love it because it is soooo easy to clean! You have no idea how many times I have cleaned vomit on that thing without any problem. My oldest, when he was much younger, even put Comet (long story) on it once and nothing major happened.

Isn't microfiber still an upholstery type material that needs cleaning? I am curious about this, too, as we will probably be replacing ours in the next couple of years.
Answer:

We have a couple of microfiber chairs that I've cleaned with a steam cleaner (just hot water) without any problems. My kids do get them pretty dirty (they really need to be cleaned again). They're very comfortable. I have no complaints about them in general. We've had them for a year and a half or two years now.
Answer:

my MIl has had hers for a little over a year now with an 18, 11 yr olds and her Dh is a contractor. So they get dirty and they clean well from what she says. The thing that I HATE about them is they are very very staticky . I mean to the point where just by sitting on them you have to be careful what the first thing you touch is when you get up.
Answer:

When you say "dirty" do you mean they show high amounts of traffic and wear and tear and possibly don't have a long life to them (based on their material) or do you mean kids wearing their shoes and eating food on them really will really do a number on them?
Answer:

We had this same dillema, and we decided to go with leather. We bought it 2 or 3 years ago now, and it is holding up fine. with a 14 yr old, 11 yr old and a baby.

also we decided to go with the brown leather couch and recliner, because of the fact that it would last longer, and we could always change the other things in the room to what was "in style". The couch and chair are always in style. Know what I mean?? this goes with both of your posts.
Answer:

I have a question about leather.....My dog jumps on the couch to snooze, do you think he would put a whole in leather with his nails. I have always found that chennile is very forgiving for furniture, but I was wondering about the microfiber too.
