Ask:
I read this in an article in the local free parenting magazine yesterday. I had no idea this type of information was available, but I guess it's all part of public record.
The article started with this quote from a school board member:
"In the last 10 years, school climates have changed dramatically due to lack of parental involvement and the steep increase in crime and violence in our communities. This is a national problem- not just in Charleston."
This was for the area where I live:
Charleston County Schools has 42,872 students in 80 schools. In 2005-2006 there were:
102 weapons violations
19 aggravated assaults
1,903 simple assaults
115 drug violations
Answer:
I know it's available but I will have to check for ours.

I worry about my children's safety where ever they are be it at school or at the mall with me. I even worry at church. But I pray each day that God will protect them and all of the children that are in our schools. I work for a local middle school here and I can tell you it is amazing how quickly things are caught at the school. And I can tell you something else - sometimes things are misleading. We have had 2 students that are good students that would be included in the weapons charges because they had a small pocket knife at school. And I know they meant no harm with them - they just forgot to take them out of their pants' pocket. I am not going to tell anyone that our school is 100% safe BUT is there any place that is 100% safe? I am not trying to downplay the serious nature of the school violence - it is a real danger. But if you have good administration, they are looking out for our kids. I know at my school the assistant principals are in the know. I hope maybe this will help put the ones of us who have children in public schools and for that matter even private schools have alittle more peace of mind when we drop our children off each morning. Just say a prayer for protection. And one important thing is to be active in your child's school. That way you will know more of what is going on and know the teachers and staff personally.

Where did you get this info? I'd love to check out my school district. It's a very large district, so I'm sure there were many incidents, but overall I do feel safe with my kids there. But you never know. They finally this year keep the doors except for the front door where you have to check in locked all the day. They used to just keep them all open. Harder for people to get in, but I guess it's a better idea to worry about safety than paren'ts convenience. So I'd love to see the reference. Thanks!!

The information came from a local magazine called "Low Country Parent". It's a free local magazine; I'm not sure if you can view it on line. I gave my copy to a friend to read the article, so I'm not sure if any other reference was given other than police reports.
