Eczema

Ask:
My twenty one month old has had this red pimply rash on his arms, legs and now cheeks for a few months. He's always had something on his arms and legs, but this cheek thing is a new development. His torso broke out over the holidays but has calmed down a bit. It's still kinda coarse to the touch and is quite bothersome ~ to me. The doc said it was a heat rash. I am not buying that. I know something is not right with him.

Just recently I noticed his feet and hands are peeling. We are waiting on an appointment with the local dermatologist to see if we can get this thing under control. Does anyone know if this may sound like Eczema. From what I am reading, I am hoping it's this and not some of the other things they have talked about (when I googled peeling hands and feet)

Thanks!

I had the same thing happen to my ds too, he was younger, there was a new pediatrician at the practice we went to and he prescribed steroid creams and said it was exzma. I was not buying that, so I made an appointment with the other dr, he was retiring, so he was transferring the practice to the new dr. well the old dr, who I have known for about 10yrs, well, he said that put Cortaid on the area once a day for two weeks, well I did and it dissappeared and never came back!
I would try the cortaid, at least in one spot and if it works, then all over.
I have a cousinw ith twins and her kids had really rough skin, she is also tring this too. it seems to be workign so far. I would try it while you wait for an apoointment with the dermotologist, hopefully this will work and you can cancel the appointment.

It does sound like eczema to me. Eucerin cream works well for my boys though Brayden did well with prescription elidel. Hope you get some answers. BTW did you know that eczema, asthma, and allergies run together as a group in families!! My family is lucky enough to have all of these!

The peeling of the hands and feet sure sound like eczema! Matthew has it really bad. I had been using a steroid cream that the doctor prescribed him, but it sort of worked, but not completely. His is really, really bad. His poor feet in the summer just look awful.

Well, this last summer, there was a new PA at the doctor's who told me to mix the steroid cream with Eucerin cream and it worked wonders!!! His feet cleared up super fast!!! He gave me a couple of other strange ideas that worked, too, for his head eczema.

Before he sees the dermatologist, I would recommend Eucerin lotion or cream. I have tried it all, trust me! It is probably like allergy meds - different ones work for different people, but we discovered Eucerin works the best. Also, try oatmeal baths every so often. Also, bath Ty less. Matthew can only be bathed every other day (he loves his baths, too), but it helped. Unless, of course, he gets really, really dirty! lol

Yah that is wierd. I read that last night. No one in my family has asthma or allergies....well wait a minute...My sister has asthma....

I also read it's a strep family virus too. WIERD

Thanks for the tips Rakshanka and Happymom. I will look further into these suggestions and hopefully give Ty a break from all of this!

I thought about that too. We give the boys a bath every night....then we went every other night. His skin feels so rough and dry that I figured it may have to do with the bath routine. Thanks Claire!

Dd has this really bad starting at age 3, thankfully she has outgrown it. I know this sounds weird but i swear it worked really well for dd: Bathe your ds in a tub of warm water with 1/2 cup of table salt. It actually tames down the roughness and itchyness, DD's dermatologist suggested it and i thought he was nuts at first because DD had open areas that were oozing and i thought the salt would make it sting, but it didn't. It's worth a try.

Thanks! I would have NEVER thought to do that. It's worth a try.

They sell "sea salt" at Dillon's/Kroger stores. It helps as well
