Cold Medications and Babies and Toddlers

Ask:
Very informative article ladies. Please read!

Answer:

Thank you! Ds is 5, so he is past this, but I still really only give him Infant Pediacare and plain Tylenol when he has a cold. I also do not medicate for a dry type cough. Now really chesty cough is different, I'll usually take him to the ped. 9 times out of 10 it's viral and I just put a vaporizer in his room during the night. I'll use nose drops too although he HATES them. Oh the joys of being a parent!! Thanks again, I am going to forward to my friend who has a 9 mo. old.

Ugh! This is good to know, but you can't convince me to simply hold and hug my kid at 3am when she can't breathe. I'm very careful about the dosages and following Dr. instructions, for the most part.

Thank you, Christy. I just wish they talked more about what you can do, like saline drops, etc.

I will bet that if we wanted to, we mommies could write some good articles and surpass these guys! Even without initials after our names!

I agree. I swear by "sudafed" to dry up a cold, but I only give what the ped says and I try to use it sparingly. Anyway, it's getting very hard to find children's meds that have "sudafed" in them with all the new laws so this should start to decrease.

My Aunt is a pharmacist and she said that the stuff they are using in place of "sudafed" really doesn't do anything unless it is in nasal drops anyway. How can you depend on a baby or toddler getting enough medicine when you have to squirt it up their nose while trying to hold them still?

All that said, we stick with the humidifier and the small amt of saline that actually gets in the nose and plenty to drink unless they are miserable, then we start to look at meds.
