Starting to Feed Baby Veggies

Ask:
DS has been on Cereals for 2 weeks. Two times a day, breakfast and dinner. Can I start him on his veggies now, or should I wait and keep him on cereal for a bit longer? I think he is ready, he does a good job with cereal (even opens his mouth and waits for the food!) but I don't want to rush him.
Also, do I give him the veggies twice a day too? Like carrots for breakfast and dinner?

Thanks so much! I appreciate it!

(DS is 4 1/2 months old)
Answer:

This is just me- I would wait 2 more weeks to start him on food. With my 1st ds I started him about now (4 1/2 months). THough with my other 3 I waited until about 5 months to start. This because my Ped. Dr. said it is better to wait to feed them food closer to 6 months. Some may say what is 2 weeks- though with babies they are growng and changing so fast- there stomach will be better in a few weeks.

You did not mention in your post that he is crying or not getting enough food- so I think he will do just fine with the cereal and milk he is getting.

Last- just be careful when starting the food- for ex. eating carrots to much can turn his skin orange. I like to to alternate between an orange veggie and a green one.

I did the all or nothing feeding with my kids. Once I started them on solids, I gave them everything at once. Not recommended by pediatricians at alll But it worked for me!
Answer:

I started Aidan on veggies about 4 months or so too. He did just fine. His pediatrician said by that age they're just hungry and sometimes the milk and cereal isn't enough. Aidan got his veggies at lunch and dinner, but we stayed with cereal at breakfast.
Answer:

I would wait a bit longer. Make sure you do try a new food and then wait at least 3-5 days before trying another new food - even with the cereals. I would try each of the cereals - waiting at least 3 days before trying another new cereal and then add a bit of a veggie to some of the cereal for a few days, then try another new veggie, adding a bit to the cereal, etc. Hope DS likes it!
Answer:

I would wait also, all mine where on cereal for at least a month or two before food. What I did-first went through a box of rice cereal, then went through a box of oatmeal cereal, then moved to mixed cereal and when that box was low I bought more and started veggies. Sometimes I mix the food in with the cereal and other times give her one at a time. But none of mine started foods until they were older, I bf so they started cereal around 5-6 months and food at 6-7 months. Now Jenna is almost ten months and she's on all baby foods, cereal, cheerios, bananas and bites of our food-mushed up/soft/etc. Hope my timeline helps! Good Luck! Your his mom you will know when he's hungry, don't doubt yourself!

My dd just turned one, and after a couple of weeks on cereal (we started at 4 months), we just gave her everything! Kept her on cereal at breakfast ... but then lunch and dinner gave her a variety of veggies and fruits. For a while, waited 3 days between introducing new ones - just to make sure there were no bad reactions ... but my doctor said as long as she was not reacting poorly, keep it going. She LOVES to eat, and has done great the whole time.
Answer:

At 4 mths ds had gone through a whole box of cereal, so we started veggies. I would start with green veggies first. Here's why: The green ones aren't as sweet as the orange ones. I started dd (#1) on green veggies, then orange, then fruit and she ate anything except spinach and broccoli. The Ped for ds (#2) said to start with orange veggies 1st and then green. I had to mix green w/orange or fruit almost the entire time he ate babyfood! I think it was because the orange ones are sweeter. Also, I gave veggies for lunch then both lunch and dinner. When I started fruits, I gave them for breakfast. I mixed all of them with cereal. HTH
