What do you all know about Staph Infections?

Ask:
The two year old I have been keeping for a friend the last two weeks has one. I noticed a boil on her bottom yesterday and told her mom. (She is not potty trained, but she wears pullups, which she had stepped into until then, when she had a poopy one. I have no idea how long the boil was there). Anyhow, they took her to the dr. today and were told she has a staph infection. I looked up info on it, but I found contradicting information. Some say it is not very contagious, some say it is VERY contagious. Some say it is open wound contact only, some say it is airborne, too. HELP!! I have six of my own children and a 13 month old I keep full time.
Answer:

Yiikes...well what did your doctor say? I would call him/her to find out the answers to all your questions, but that's me.
Answer:

As I understand Its very contagous but I might be wrong. As your doctor.
Answer:

I would think if it's staph in a boil, unless you come in contact with any drainage from it you wouldn't catch it. So as long as it's covered and she doesn't touch it and then touch something else, I think you'll be okay. But good handwashing just in case!!

That is about what our ped told us when dd was exposed at school. If I rememebr correctly, it not only has to come from the infected person's "sores" it also had to enter a break in the skin of the new person as well. DD was slightly at a higher risk because she sucks her thumb and that compromises the protectiveness of her skin on the thumb. Ultimately she was fine.

Also, the ped asked where the infected child had the infection. Where the infection is helps determine which kind of infection it is. This one is the most common in children.

Hello,

I had a Staph infection myself. I finally went to a Determitologist (do not know how to spell it..., you know, skin doctor) . I had to be on antibotics for a little while, but it went a way. How I caught it, not sure because I am a germ freak and wash my hands constantly.
To answer your question, I do not believe it can be caught. At least that is what my Dr told me. I agree with the other posts which suggest the boil has to open, and the drainage has to get into the opening of another person. I had mine for several months because I kept going back to my primary, getting the boil drained, and put on a general antibotic. On top of that I got it while I was expecting. I was very worried, but my daughter is fine, I am fine, and my husband did not get it. Finally, my primary referred me to a Determoglist who put me on a medicine specifically for staff infections.
I hope this helps.

Answer:

OUCH ! I know you can get a tube of this stuff called Black sab at the drug store . YOu have to ask the pharmcy guy for it . Its a couple bucks , you put it on the infected site and it brings the boil to a head so it will pop. I had a boil when i was pregnant with kaylee the dr had to lance open . I would do something now. If its draining already leave it alone. But if not its VERY painful . Try the black sab it work wonderful by the next mornig it will come to a head . Poor bb I hope it hurrys away those things hurt.
