Cutting up Grapes...

Ask:
At what age do you stop cutting up grapes for your kids?

I have a huge "fear of choking", so I probably cut my kids grapes for them much longer than necessary. Until my kids are about 18mos I cut each grape into about 10 pieces! <<<laughing at myself>>> Then from 18mos to 2 I cut each grape into 4 or 6 pieces, depending on the size! At about 2, I cut them into quarters (halves if I'm feeling brave...)

My first child was a real "choking" kid... always choking and giving me a heart attack. The other 2 have been easier, but I still cut up those darn grapes.

Well, I just gave my 4.5 yo WHOLE grapes. I guess this is normal.... but I still told him, "Ok, be careful! Make sure you chew these well...." I am so paranoid about choking.

I ask this question because I knew a mom who gave her kids whole grapes at 12 months! Perhaps she's normal and I'm the total FREAK!!!!
Answer:

The little one I have now never was a choker so I never have cut grapes for her. She learned to bite them in half instead of popping them into her mouth whole. When I was raising my first round of kids (all in their 20's and 30's now), cutting grapes was unheard of.
Answer:

I started giving them whole grapes at 2, before that I used to peel them and then cut. What a pain.
Answer:

I cut up grapes till they were about 2, but I only cut them in half.
Answer:

I cut them in half for the 2 year old if I can keep up with her, she LOVES grapes. My 4 year old has to have hers cut in half, just because I'm doing it for her sister!
Answer:

My ds is 4 and I cut them in half. Better to be safe then sorry!
Answer:

I have that same fear of choking. DH & my dad tease me about how small I cut things up sometimes. Now I cut grapes in quarter for dd (3); I cut blueberries up also. What a mess!
Answer:

I never cut up their grapes. I didn't give stuff like that to them until they had a pretty good mouth of teeth, so I didn't worry about it.
Answer:

I'm like you! You are suppose to cut them until 4 years old. Or at least they are labeled a choking hazard until 4 yrs. Same with Hot dogs, but everyone thinks I'm a freak for cutting those up as well! So I don't cut Julia's anymore, but I still cut Jared's in half (and Jenna isn't eating that kind of food yet but her's will be cut tiny)
Answer:

Ds just turned 5 and if the grapes are large I still cut them up, although he hates it!

I still cut his hot dogs up, my friend who knows a paramedic said that under the age of SIX that is still the most common thing for a child to choke on. So he's out of luck until then, and since he is also a choker, we'll just have to wait and see! I always have to remind the in-laws of this.
