Ask:
Ok, so my 11 yr old soon to be 12 in April, is bugging me to let me shave her legs. She is in 6th grade. I am making her wait. I was 13.
So, what is an appropriate age??
Oh, and I have tried to tell her that once she starts she will hate it and wish she had waited. But what does Mom know??
Answer:
well my 11yr old DD just decided one day to do it without asking. She found my razor on the shelf in the bathtub/shower and just decided to shave her legs. She's been doing her own legs since this past summer and actually does a good job at it! Not that she needs too, she's got blonde hairs on her legs, but she wants too,so as long as she does a good job and doesn't cut herself,i'm okay with it. She does her armpits too (that area she does need done!), but i warned her not to shave any "other" areas!! lol
Answer:
6th grade is fine in my house.

I think my daughters were 5th or 6th grade.

Ok, so maybe I am being a meanie...maybe I will surprise her when she gets home today. I know one thing....I won't have to tell her to take a shower tonight...LOL.

That is exactly what my dd did. I was talking to another Mom about what age should girls start shaving their legs and she was telling me her dd just did it and for me not to be surprised if my dd had already done it. So I was like no, she would ask....
Nope...I got home told my daughter to let me see her legs and to my gosh...she had!
She actually had said she only did it once a few days earlier....funny huh. My dd has dark hair though and she needs to do it all the time now....but she is good about it. They get more aware of themselves and their needs in 7th grade......I'm sure 8th is where it will really start though. I am just waiting now for her to get her cycle. I wonder if she will tell me? I'm not so sure anymore...lol

I let my DD start shaving right before 6th grade. Someone once told me if she's old enough to be bothered by it, she's probably old enough to shave...not sure I agree with that 100%...but it worked for me!!
Just one caution. DD wanted to use one of those no razor lotions. I figured that was safer then a blade. She got one (I can't remember..it wasn't Nair), she followed the directions and tested it out on a small patch of skin and then waited like 24 hours to make sure she had no reaction, and she was fine. But when she actually used it all over her legs it started burning her leg so bad she was crying and we had to wash it off. Her legs were red and blotchy for days. So, we went to the blade. She has had no problem with it.
Good Luck!!!

To me, this is not worth fighting over, considering all the OTHER things you start fighting at this age!!! LOL Also, it is a self esteem thing when other girls are doing it already. NOT that that is a good reason alone, but put yourself in her shoes, I guess. I have a dd who is 11 and in the fifth grade. She shaves her legs......about every six months!!!!!! She did it a few times and decided it was too much work! Gee, Mom WAS right!!!
