Ask:
What a nightmare that has been for me and my youngest ds. he throws an absolute fit. I actually had to sit on the chair with him on my lap and then had to pin his head to my chest so the hair dresser can get around his ears. Poor thing. I was happy that the salon was empty ~ I wouldn't want to scare any clients away!!
How old was your child when he/she went for his/her first hair cut?
How did they do?
Was it any better the second time around?
Answer:
My oldest two always liked to get their hair cut, but youngest dd hates it. We have to get it cut for testing every year and I have finally taken a blanket wrap her with hold her on my lap and let them cut. If I don't she kicks screams bites and I get many bruises. I think this is awful to do but with her special needs it is safer that way. As for the yelling we just live through it.
Answer:
Actually, my younger son had so much hair he got his first hair cut at 5 months!! My older son got his cut the first time at 9 months. They've both gotten haircuts about every three months since then (they get their hair cut every time I do) so it's just something they've always done (although my older son did go through a period where haircuts scared him and he wouldn't do it unless he could sit on my lap).
I think it helps that they see the same person every time and that they see Mommy get her hair cut too. My older son has graduated to sitting in the chair by himself but the 15 month old still sits on my lap. It's safer and that way I can hold him steady while the hairdresser cuts. It also helps to have toys or something for them to hold. If they're paying attention to something they're holding, they're less aware of what is happening and less likely to move suddenly.

I wish I had good news on this issue. We have been getting my childs haircut since he was one. He screams and has to be held down to this day and he is almost 4. We have started doing his hair at home and talking him through it. It is usually an hour to two hour event. He is beginning to get better, but we still have issues. I hope yours gets better sooner....
Answer:
My DS#1 was 1 1/2 years old for his first hair cut, and he did fine. DS#2 was about 15 months when he got his first and he did fine too. They're now 5 and 3 1/2 and I take them every month to get their hair cut, and they actually look forward to it. I've never had to sit in the chair with them. One of DH's nephew is same age as DS#2 and he's a terror to watch while getting a hair cut. He throws the biggest fit. He doesn't even do good at Cartoon Cuts. I've never heard of any kid not doing well there. Have you tried Cartoon Cuts? I hope he gets over the fear.
Answer:
My oldest ds has always done great with haircuts. My youngest ds is a totally different story. We would throw a fit, kick, scream, hit, and anything else he could do. It took my dh and I holding him down so he could get a haircut. The good news is he is 5 now, and he is not bad about it anymore. We let him start taking his gameboy with him and it takes his mind off it some what. He still is scared and shaking, but at least he is not throwing a fit anymore. I sincerely hope your ds is younger than mine was before it gets better. 5 years of that was just heart-breaking.
Answer:
My oldest ds did ok his first time and has gotten better ever since. My youngest one screams, kicks and says "ow" the entire time! It's funny but not at the same time ~ especially if there are people in the shop when he's going through this fit! What kinda worked for us on Monday was giving him the water spritzer. As I held him on my lap he continually sprayed me in the face with water and laughed and laughed and laughed....while crying "ow" too!!
Answer:
My kids all had lots of hair so they were right around 10 months for their first haircut. The boys did great! We have a place that specializes in children's haircuts with a car and motorcycles to sit on, toys, a TV to watch and things like that so they love going.
My dd, meanwhile, HATES it!!! She sits on my lap and we just feed her Smarties slowly through the process. We went last week, as a matter of fact, and she started screaming when we pulled in the parking lot!
But, we survived. She gets better with each one.
Answer:
My DS HATES to get his hair cut! He is 2 1/2. It is just not a choice HE gets to make at our house. All 3 of the boys get their hair cut every other month. I took DS just 2 days ago and he was not happy about it. He cried when we walked into the shop. I sit and hold him on my lap and firmly tell me he is doing it. He cries....but leaves with a fresh haircut. Some things we do not budge on. Haircuts are one of them.
Answer:
My oldest DD is 4 and LOVES getting her hair cut! She's a real girly girl and just sits there staring at herself while it's cut My poor little 2 year old DD doesn't have enough hair to cut yet. When she does I fear it will not be easy. She doesn't like me to fix her hair or even brush it now.
